Eastlake, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 43,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the East Fork of the Maumee River, about 20 miles east of Cleveland and 10 miles west of Akron. The site where Eastlake now stands was part of the Scioto Township area which was founded in 1796 by James Krieger. In 1836, it became part of the newly created Summit County when it was organized from parts of Wayne and Cuyahoga counties. The town began to grow rapidly after being designated as its own municipality in 1871. In 1907, Eastlake annexed part of neighboring unincorporated Parkland Township; this annexation made it a city with a total population exceeding 100,000 for only the third time in history. In 1957, Eastlake joined with other cities along Lake Erie's eastern shore (Watertown Heights-Lackawanna Heights-Merritt Island), forming an "urban agglomeration" known as "Erie City". This group had strong economic interests because they shared water resources with each other and were able to negotiate better water rights than their smaller suburban counterparts – something that would come into play during later years when those same suburbs fought against efforts to build larger reservoirs around their cities' borders. They also developed close ties with other large American cities such as New York City and Chicago through professional associations and joint marketing ventures such as Bridgeport-New Haven Railroad Tours or Chicago Tribune Tourist Company trips to see their major rivals up close without having to leave their neighborhoods
