It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The area that now includes Eastlake was first settled by Europeans in 1795 as part of what became known as the Northwest Territory. In 1802, eastern parts of Lucas County were detached to form Union Township and in 1813, east side of Mahoning County became Ashtabula Township. The townships were consolidated into one in 1834. The name "Eastlake" was given to the town by General John Allen during his command of troops during the Battle of Fallen Timbers in October1837. According to United States Census Bureau data, Eastlake has a total area of , all land. As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 381 people residing in Eastlake Township: 236 males and 248 females. The racial makeupof Eastlake township was 96% White (non-Hispanic), 2% African American, 0% Native American, 2% Asian/Pacific Islander, 2% from other races, and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or LatinoOf any race were 5%.

In 1925, Eastern Ohio University (EOU) merged with EON to form Baylor University which remains one of America's leading universities today. Eastlake, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The population was 61,711 as of the 2010 census. Eastlake is part of the Cleveland–Elyria–Mentor, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1802 by James Kapp and others on land that now includes much of downtown Cleveland and parts of University Heights, Euclid Heights and Midtown Cleveland. In 1836, Eastlake became part of the new State of Ohio after it was organized from portions of three other counties: Muskingum, Portage and Trumbull. In 1907, Eastlake established its own school board which built what is now the local high school (later renamed Eastlake High School). On December 12, 1907 a fire destroyed most of town center including many homes in what is now University Heights; however most residents were able to rebuild quickly with help from friends and family. After years of campaigning by Mayor Wm Hennepin to have a college or universitybe located in eastlake- he eventually succeeded- Euclid College opened on November 15th 1922 making eastlake one stop on an already lengthy path for higher education in central Ohio The city has seen several waves of immigrants over time - first German in 1801-2 then Italian in 1903-4 then Polish during World War II until all but two families left following defeat by Japan at Pearl Harbor In recent decades there has been an increasing number African Americans moving into town as well as Latinos Mayor Frank Jackson who served from 1973 until his death announced plans to make east Lake home to both a mosque (the first such building ever constructed within municipal limits) as well as open space for community use
