Eastlake is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. The name "eastlake" may come from the location of the town on a high bluff overlooking the Ohio River and its tributaries. The first settlers in what is now Eastlake were a group of Methodists who moved to the area in 1814. They named their community after their parish, East Lansing Parish in Louisiana. In 1825, they sold out to General John Stark and his partners who started the village of Eastlake on land that had been part of Stroudsburg Township in Huntingdon County. The name change came about because many residents found that Livingston Parish in Louisiana sounded too French for them and they preferred "Eastlake". In 1845, Andrew Jackson granted land to George Hinton and others for use as a township; it was called East Lansing Township but became Eastlake when it was organized as a city by an act of the Ohio legislature on July 1, 1850. On December 4, 1870, Morrill Act No. 7 created Indian Territory east of Iowa line; this included all present-day Lucas County except for parts of Cleveland and Akron which became part of Cuyahoga County under Ohio law following Indian Removal. At first there were no schools or hospitals within Indian Territory so public health was provided by surrounding tribesman who also hunted game for food and clothing for their people. Eastlake, Ohio is a small town located in the northwest corner of Ohio. The population was 6,083 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1824 by John Eastlake and his wife Martha Green. The first settler in what is now Eastlake was George Washington Owens. He built a log cabin on the east bank of the Mayflower River. In 1829, Eastlake became a village and it retains that name to this day. On October 1, 1836, settlers from neighboring Westfield moved into what is now Eastlake and began to build homes there. The village had no school until 1841 when James Fenton opened a schoolhouse on Main Street near today's post office. In 1865, residents of nearby Uniontown voted to secede from Cleveland and form their own municipality called "Uniontown." However, this measure failed to receive enough signatures to be placed on the local ballot and it remains an unincorporated community today (although Uniontown has been mentioned as a potential site for an eastern border city). On November 3rd, 1922, voters in Eastlake passed an ordinance adopting annexation by Warren Township which then merged with Strongsville Township on February 9th 1923 due to population growth within those municipalities combined (Eastlake's population had increased by over 50% since 1920). Today’s Eastlake is one of many townships in Warren Township that have been annexed into other municipalities over time – including Strongsville Township (1920), Maple Heights Township (1925), Cache Valley Borough (1927), Parma Heights Borough (1932), Euclid Heights Borough (1940), Wilmot Heights Borough (1945) and Fairview Hills Borough(1968). Additionally, several villages have also incorporated into larger communities over time including White Marsh Village(1864), Beacon Hill/Centerville(1875), North Olmsted Village(1900) and South Olmsted Village(1910).

It is the largest city in Cuyahoga County by population and is the second-largest city on the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Eastlake were white men from Pennsylvania who arrived during the early 1800s. They built a log cabin on what became known as Cumberland Creek and started to Cultivate corn and other crops. In 1828, they founded the town of Eastlake after buying land from John Fenton of Cincinnati. The first post office was established in 1829 in downtown Eastlake with David Starr Jordan as its first clerk. The influx of new residents turned Eastlake into an agricultural center with a large number of farms and homes being erected along Cumberland Creek between 1830 and 1860. Many businesses such as Smith & Wesson Arsenal (1830), Griggs & Co (1835), and US Steel Corporation (1910) were founded here during this time period including many that still operate today such as Gibson Guitars (1920) and Meyers Antique Glass (1990). In 1874, voters approved annexation by Cleveland of neighbouring Summit Hill Township which had also been annexed by Cleveland just two years earlier. This led to increased competition for jobs within Cleveland's expanding urban area and eventually caused many small towns throughout Northeast Ohio to go out of business or be abandoned altogether due to economic decline over several decades.
