He named his new tract "Eastlake" after his old home town of Orleans, France which he had recently left behind to travel eastward into America to explore new lands.[1] In 1807, Pryor built a dam on Beaver Creek to provide power for his farmlands west of present day Eastlake; today's Beaver Creek Dam primarily serves as a hiking pond.[2] In 1819, James Purdy settled at what is now Blair Road near present-day Woodhaven Boulevard; this location would later become part of EastLake proper. Purdy ran a sawmill on Beaver Creek until 1830 when he moved it downstream to its current site along Cedar Avenue near Shore Road because he wanted it closer to populated areas and wasn't able to get enough wood from his farmlands alone.[3] In 1830–31 Drury & Whitney erected a brick courthouse on Clinton Street (now Washington Ave) adjacent to Purdy’s mill; this building still stands today and can be seen from various parts of town.[4][5][6] By 1840, about 60% of all buildings constructed in east central Ohio were built by Irish Catholics,[7][8]mostly due to subsidies offered by President Andrew Johnson during his tenure as president (1865–1868).[9][10] This period marked an important shift away from subsistence farming towards larger commercial farms that produced more crops year-round under systems such as tenant farming or carpentering utilizing child labor concessions given by local landowners[11]. In 1845–46 General Tilghman Blake founded Blake's Land Company which purchased 640 acres (248 ha) along Beaver Creek between Clinton Street and Erie Avenue from Purdy for $25 per acre ($640/ha). Eastlake is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, west of Cleveland and south of Cincinnati. The population was 25,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lake County. The first permanent settler in what is now Eastlake was Nathaniel Kimball who arrived in 1797. Other early settlers included John Brown and his brother James who came in 1802; Ebenezer Holmes, David Slade and others in 1814-1815; Samuel Morse and his brother Nicholas in 1826; John Wills, Sr., with his family coming in 1830; Elijah Chapman and others arrive from Ireland around 1840. Eastlake became a town on December 3, 1903 when it was incorporated as part of the city of Cleveland. On March 15, 1907 it became part of the new city of Cincinnati following annexation by that city from Cleveland. The population growth during this time period led to increased development near Forest Park Boulevard including an increase from 1,500 to 10,000 square feet (100 m2) lot sizes within two years after incorporation! This rapid growth allowed for more than one hundred businesses to open within two decades! On November 16, 1930 Eastlake's charter was amended changing its name to "Lakeland" due to its location on a lake bordering both cities which formed the eastern border then between Cleveland and Cincinnati – making it "the perfect place for business people." In 1936 Lakeland annexed much larger portions of neighboring townships including: Trumbull Heights (now North Royalton), South Royalton (now Norwalk), Whitehall Heights (now Delaware Hills) etc., creating what is today known as Midtown Eastside Business District which encompasses all but one block northward along Forest Park Boulevard from Euclid Avenue eastward until just beyond 14th Street! This area has experienced significant economic redevelopment since then becoming home to major office buildings such as HERSCO Storage Facility on East Fourth Street/Uptown mall adjacent thereto/Herschel Walker Furniture Store inside One World Trade Center across Fifth Avenue from downtown Erieview Mall/ numerous other heavy industry tenants over time which can be seen throughout many blocks encompassing most or all sides of Euclid Avenue bisecting Midtown east-west!
