Eastlake, Ohio is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,851 at the 2010 census. The name means "east of the creek" in the Lenape language. The first permanent settler in Eastlake was Nicholas Durencker in 1814. In 1825, John Ketchum founded what is now called Ketchum Falls and other farming communities east of downtown on the Scioto River. It wasn't until 1836 that Eastlake had its first schoolhouse and began to grow as a small town with some 1,000 residents. In 1845, Eastlake became one of the original townships in Lucas County when it was formed from parts of Scioto Township and North Miami Township. The township's first mayor was James Mackintosh. From 1847-1849, Eastlake suffered through one of America's most devastating natural disasters when a severe storm destroyed many homes and businesses along the Scioto River near present day South Park Avenue and Third Street. A total of $1 million worth of damage was done to businesses including 100 stores and 400 homes During World War II, Eastlake played an important role as an airfield for bomber training operations over central Ohio during Wartime Operation Torch which began on October 8th., 1942 Eastlake has experienced economic growth over recent years due to its location within close proximity to Cleveland International Airport as well as being home to various manufacturing facilities including Ford Motor Company (the company’s largest employer), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (a major player in American industry), Menard’s department store chain (one of America’s largest), Deere & Co., Luken Corporation (a leading manufacturer of agricultural equipment) – among others As a result of these factors there has been increased demand for housing throughout much of Downtown EastLake while also seeing construction commence on numerous new restaurants and retail establishments such as Macy’s Department Store; Home Depot; Sears; JCPenney; Lowe’s Hardware; Dunkin Donuts - all located just minutes away from each other making it easy for locals and visitors alike to get their fix without having to leave their neighborhoods
