Eastlake is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 26,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lucas County. Eastlake was founded in 1827 and has been a Village since 1892. The current mayor of Eastlake is Larry Klayman. The first settler in what is now Eastlake was Levi Coffin who arrived on the Pigeon River in 1797. The town site was chosen by commissioners from Mansfield Township on May 3, 1827 after surveyors identified a tract of land that would form the nucleus of what would become Eastlake. In 1857, two brothers named John Crain and George Wills built their home (later known as the First Congregational Church) on North Main Street and became men of influence in town affairs. In 1865 they donated land to build an academy which would become Eastern High School; when it opened its doors for students on November 1, 1865 it was one of only three high schools in Ohio offering coursework leading to college eligibility. On October 25, 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt paid a visit to East Lake and commemorated its anniversary with a picnic on Elmira Road near Brushy Creek where he had taken part in an early foot race event organized by his friend and golfing partner Andrew Johnson years earlier. With General Motors cars parked nearby for onlookers to watchthe race starting from each side of Elmira Road before merging onto Brushy Creek Road following a routing that took them around Maple Hill Cemetery then down Vine Street into downtown East Lake village limits- this event remains today one of America's most popular tourist attractions attracting more than 100,000 visitors annually- making it one of the most visited small towns nationally not just during Presidents' inaugurations but also other important national holidays such as Memorial Day and Columbus Day
