Eastlake is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing– Warren– Hillsdale, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Eastlake was Nicholas Hough, who arrived in 1824 and erected a log cabin on the site of today's east end of town. Eastlake's first school was opened in 1829 by subscription and tuition only for boys. The school closed in 1835 because there were not enough pupils to justify its expense. A new school building was constructed on the current site of Town Hall in 1853 and named after George Washington Carver, one of Eastlake's early settlers. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Eastlake served as headquarters for General Joseph Kossuth during his ill-fated attempt to cross the river at Montrose Rapids (now considered an Historic Site). After the war ended, most soldiers returned home but a few remained behind to help build Fort Dearborn which stood on land owned by eastern residents north of town until it became part of Township Limits in 1925. In 1870 additional land was acquired from Detroit Edison Company founder Samuel Morse and donated to township trustees for use as a rural public square which still exists today near downtown Eastlake. In 1898 local physician Augustus Graham built a house on Park Road just outside present day Eastlake limits (it still stands) as his primary residence while practices were located nearby at Park & Main streetside clinics which he founded with Drs. John Prentice & Lewis Howland along with their wives Gertrude Bakewell & Ida Maynard Peirce also resided there from 1898 until 1962 when they relocated to Hollandale Hospital west side Campus where they remain status quo health care providers providing quality family health services since then!
