In 1853, a railroad station was built in East Liverpool as part of the construction of the Erie Canal. The community grew rapidly and by 1870 had a population of 14,000 people. That year it produced 1 million barrels of oil. In 1924–25, Third Coast Steel Corporation operated a steel workers' training camp called Camp Chase located on what is now Main Street between Elm and Maple Streets in East Liverpool. It attracted many steelworkers from all over America due to its proximity to major mills and shipyards along the Toledo Shipbuilding & Drydock Company's riverfront site on Mud Lake.. After World War II ended development increased within eastern Cleveland County; so much so that East Liverpool lost its status as an agricultural center altogether during this time period becoming more industrialized than rural until after 1990 when new housing developments began to form around downtowns across northeast Ohio resulting in significant retail redevelopment around Foundry Square—a former mill district now Little Italy with several high end restaurants—making it one of northeast Ohio’s most vibrant cities today
