The city is located on both banks of the Olentangy River, about 12 miles (19 km) south of downtown Cleveland and 20 miles (32 km) north of Akron. The site where East Cleveland now stands was first inhabited by the Lenape Indians before becoming part of British America during the early 18th century as part of the Northwest Territory. In 1800, it became part of what is now Erie County, Pennsylvania, until its annexation by Ohio in 1802. East Cleveland was founded on April 15, 1814 by Nathaniel Dowling and others as a village named for their future town square—Easton Township had been established two days earlier—but did not become a separate municipality until May 3, 1816 when it incorporated as a town under the name "Eastcleveland." On March 15, 1835 – just over 100 years ago – East cleveland celebrated its Centennial with an event which included an oration delivered by then Mayor John Prentice to commemorate that date; this event took place at First Congregational Church on Euclid Avenue in downtown East Cleveland In 1925 City Council passed Resolution No 1 creating plans for a water tower and other new public works within 5 years followed up with even more ambitious goals such as having all streets paved within 10 years In 1928 City Council passed Resolution No 2 authorizing $1 million for mass transit improvements including construction of several underground stations across downtown including ones beneath Third Street near today’s Quicken Loans Arena This program eventually led to construction beginning in 1933 and completion in 1936–37 bringing subway service to Downtown East Cleveland On July 9th 1938 - only five months after cityhood - voters approved incorporation into Cuyahoga County with precincts being redistricted along racial lines resulting in most African Americans moving out west while white residents continued to cluster around downtown . This gave rise to many nicknames for east CLEVELAND such as "The Great Negro Migration" due largely to this segregation policy that lasted into the 1970s

The first European settlement in what is now East Cleveland was made by Stephan Brosius in 1788 as part of the survey for his land claim to what is now Lucasville Township. In 1802, John Dennison founded the town of Zanesville on an area near present-day Newark Road and State Street. The two towns amalgamated on July 1, 1823 to form East Cleveland under the leadership of Mayor James Maysville. John Deere began operations at their new factory in East Cleveland on December 15, 1892; this marked a turning point for American agriculture which would become largely based on mass production methods thanks to Deere's innovations such as big four-wheeled tractors and interchangeable parts that allowed farmers to produce crops more efficiently with less labor costs
East Cleveland was founded in 1824 as a town on the east side of the Cuyahoga River. The first settler, George Washington, came to East Cleveland in 1826. In 1830, John Fenton bought land at the junction of State Route 23 and State Route 52. In 1835, he built the first home in East Cleveland. The town grew rapidly and by 1840 had a population of 1,500 people. In 1851, the Licking County Courthouse was built and served as the town's courthouse until it was replaced by the current building in 1903. In 1870, East Cleveland gained city status and became one of Ohio's six cities. The first mayor of East Cleveland was Solomon Aldermen from 1871 to 1880. The early decades of the 20th century were difficult for East Cleveland because it depended on agriculture for its revenue stream. However, during this time period there were several important developments that led to increased prosperity for East Cleveland: 1) The construction of two major railroad lines:the Great Lakes Railroad (later Conrail) and Northern Pacific Railway (now CSX). These companies brought new jobs and wealth to eastern Ohioans who could now travel easily to those larger markets. 2) An alcohol prohibition amendment was passed by Congress in 1920 which led to an increase in business opportunities for businesses that sold booze; this also helped spur economic development within East Cleveland as bootlegging moved from rural areas into urban areas across America beginning in earnest during this time period
