By 1840, East Cleveland had 3 stores, 5 blacksmiths, 2 wheelwrights, 1 carpenter/cabinet maker, 2 physicians (1 male and 1 female), 1 justice of peace (1 minister), 3 schools (3 elementary level schools, one high school), 1 church (Episcopal) and 4 businesses (2 groceries store with 5 employees supplemented by two cooperatives). In 1850 East Cleveland acquired control over all but one school district from neighboring Sandusky; this single exception remain until 2002 when it merged into Cuyahoga Heights School District #2 In addition to its role as an economic center for central Ohio since early times, East Cleveland also played a significant role in American history through hosting many key events marking national significance such as Woodrow Wilson's inauguration as President on February 12th 1913 or World War II when it served as headquarters for Operation Overlord Today some residents still refer nostalgically to those days when "the best place to work" was "in east cleveland." With over 36 thousand residents within City limits according to 2010 census data there are plenty of places where people can find employment without leaving their homes! Many small businesses have sprung up along side big name companies like IBM etc... which continue to thrive even during slow times! With so much happening outside City Limits yet so little reported locally I believe that there must be more citizens taking action towards reporting what's going on - whether that be writing letters or contacting elected officials!
