East Cleveland, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The population was 11,642 at the 2010 census, making it the eighth-largest city in Greater Cleveland. The city is located on a peninsula extending into Lake Erie and has a land area of just under two square miles (5 km2). The first mention of East Cleveland is in 1795 when French explorers were mapping the Great Lakes region and noted that there was "a large village situ'd on an island in the middle of this body of water" named after Jean-Baptiste Pointe-aux-Trembles, Comte de Clermont. This village had been founded by French also explorer Nicholas Perrot as early as 1696 while he was working for Spanish fur traders on what is now Toronto Island. In 1803, William Haines built Fort Wayne on Mud Creek east of present day East Cleveland to protect US merchant shipping along the Miami River from British attacks during the War of 1812. On December 12th 1920 Mayor Jealous decided against burning down any stores due mainly to financial reasons however orders still remained effective enough that several small fires occurred over Christmas holiday period some resulting in injuries including one man who lost an eye while using a makeshift store fire extinguisher . Store windows were left largely unscathed despite high levels OF smoke created by burning combustible materials inside buildings . Following these events mayor Jealous announced his intent not only to rebuild downtown but also build housing specifically for soldiers presence . However this decision did not receive much public support so instead Housing Authority developed Plan D which would have housed about 1000 people within walking distance Of downtown with access To education,, health care And parks
