The first permanent settlers in what would become East Cleveland were two families from Newark, Delaware who arrived in 1788 and named their community after their home town, England's Liverpool. They were followed by others during the years before 1813 when much of present-day Cuyahoga County was acquired by the United States as part of the Kansas Purchase Treaty. In 1813, James Webb founded what became Eastern Reserve University on land that he had bought from Hyatt brothers for $2,500 (the equivalent of about ). Webb wanted to create a landowning society where students could receive an education and develop their skills while living close toicago and other major cities. He also aimed to provide employment for local residents in lieu of buying timber or selling goods into marketplaces near Indianapolis and Buffalo; this plan failed but helped set eastern Cleveland apart as one of America's mostindustrializing areas during its early period. In 1835, Josephine Plank (1807-1892) settled on a farm she purchased east of downtown East Cleveland with her husband John Brougham (1795-1868). She began raising cattle and hogs on her property until she decided to open up a school in 1839 which would later become Eastern Reserve University During World War II many industries developed along with military production including vehicles, planes etc., some examples are: Rubber Works at 440 Euclid Ave., Paper Products at 3443 Asbury Ave., Aircraft Manufacturing at 7112 Lorain Rd., Engine Production at 7200 Boardman Rd.– all now closed but still standing as historical landmarks

East Cleveland was once a small village in central Ohio. The population of the village peaked at 375 in 1920, but has since decreased to around 100 residents. The Village of East Cleveland was founded on December 12, 1806 by Colonel John Fenton and his wife Catherine as a farmstead on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River. The first post office opened in 1807, and the first store opened in 1809. In 1814, the Fentons donated land to create a town square and named it East Cleveland after their home county of England. The first school in East Cleveland was built on what is now First Street in 1815. The village had two churches by 1830, with Baptist services being held at least twice a year until 1840 when Elmira Church became operational. A ferry service connected East Cleveland with Westerville from 1838-1844. In 1865, the Village of East Cleveland annexed the Town of Westerville to its west side for tax purposes. In 1951, when Westerville merged into Ulysses S. Grant Township, East Cleveland became an independent township under local government jurisdiction within Grant Township limits. After World War II ended and America experienced rapid economic growth during the postwar period, many people moved into East Cleveland from surrounding townships and villages due to new opportunities that were available there such as manufacturing jobs or health care services unavailable in their original communities. However, over time some aspects of social life within the community have changed such as less diversity among residents becoming more similar along socioeconomic lines which may have contributed to tension between these groups; this tension has been further exacerbated by gentrification efforts which have increased prices for homes while reducing access to affordable housing statewide
