Businesses continued to grow throughout World War II; during that time, East Cleveland became an important center for munitions production. East Cleveland, Ohio is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 34,671 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River and is bordered by Cleveland to the north, Strongsville to the west, Lakewood to the south and Euclid Heights to the east. The area that would become East Cleveland was first settled by Native Americans in 1788. In 1812, James K. Polk founded what would be called "the original" town of East Cleveland around a small mill he founded on the Mill Creek near modern-day Union Park. It was named for General John Forbes who had also settled in this area in 1812. For most of its early history East Cleveland functioned as a small village with a few homes and businesses dotting an agricultural landscape that stretched from Euclid Heights to Strongsville. In 1868, during the American Civil War, East Cleveland joined forces with neighboring Lorain Township and formed an independent municipality known as "Lorain & East Cleveland". On July 1 of that year it adopted a new charter which included both Lorain Township and East Cleveland within its limits making it one large municipality for all of Cuyahoga County. During World War II much of what is now downtown East Cleveland was destroyed by bombing raids from Japan while parts were developed into modern day neighborhoods such as Forest Hills and Hillcrest Hills near Green Street/Walking Street intersection on the riverfront. However much has since been rebuilt including several blocks along State Road 825 between Walnut Avenue/Highway 58 (now Harrison Boulevard) and Cedar Road/State Route 935 just east of Interstate 77 (now I-79). With economic development starting throughout Greater Cincinnati beginning in 1960s Plainfield Township began moving out towards downtown employment opportunities opened up there leading many people who had once lived in Plainfield Township to move into eastern suburbs like Warren or Berea after those areas became more accessible through I-71 exits closer thereto becoming part of Clevelander or Arlington Heights ZIP Codes rather than simply using their full name when applying for government services etc... This trend continued until well into today with elderly residents still living inside their township boundaries despite efforts by officials there over recent years to attract younger residents Downtown - often resulting in gridlock situations on main streets when young people trying out for open jobs suddenly have nowhere elseto go without causing major traffic disruptions on nearby streets
