The rapid growth of manufacturing during World War II caused many factories to close; however, new arrivals such as Ford Motor Company helped revive local businesses and create over 100 jobs during 1945-1946 alone. East Cleveland, Ohio is a city in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 22,812 at the 2010 census. At one time it was the most populous municipality east of the Mississippi River. It is the home of East Cleveland State Community College and East Cleveland Municipal Airport. The first people to live in what is now East Cleveland were the Algonquian-speaking Shawnee Indians who arrived in 1795 from present day Oklahoma. They built their village on what is now the eastern edge of town and called it "Canton". The present-day city was founded by European immigrants in 1813 when Andrew Carnegie donated land to become a town. In 1815, John Barnes purchased 100 acres (40 ha) of land north of downtown for $10 per acre ($2 per ha). He named his new community "East Cleveland". Two years later, Barnes sold additional land northeast of downtown for $20 per acre ($4 per ha). This led to a boom in real estate speculation and development that continues to this day. In 1827, four brothers founded the first foundry in what is now East Cleveland: Henry Ford's Iron Works and Machine Shop on Brush Avenue; George Stephenson's Rolling Mill on North Main Street; and John Duryea's Coal Mines on Canfield Avenue. These early businesses helped create Demandtown—the largest manufacturing center east of the Allegheny Mountains—and attracted many talented workers from central Michigan and Pennsylvania who erected monster mills such as those located near Youngstown and Pittsburgh respectively during this time period. By 1830, many people had already moved away fromdemandtown due to lack of jobs or other pressing concerns because prices for agricultural goods had fallen so much below normal levels due to competition from nearby factories. However, some residents decided to stay behind because they saw economic opportunity hereabouts despite low wages or difficult living conditions caused by extreme weather conditions like snowmelt during wintertime which destroyed roads and disrupted farming operations across eastern Ohio Valley communities such as Painesville/Greene County/Johnston County etc., During prohibition era (1892-1920), East Cleveland became known as "The Birthplace Of prohibition" because all alcoholic beverages were banned within its boundaries except beer that could be bought directly from local breweries subject to control by state authorities monopoly
