East Cleveland, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and part of the Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area. The population was 27,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cuyahoga County. East Cleveland was founded in 1814 by people from what is now Westchester County, New York as a town on the Scioto River. It became an incorporated municipality in 1825 and a city in 1868 when it annexed parts of neighboring Lorain Township. The history of East Cleveland can be traced back to 1814 when settlers from what is now Westchester County, New York started moving into present-day Cuyahoga County to escape religious persecution in their home country. They named their new community after their hometown,Easton, Pennsylvania which they had seen while visiting that location during the American Revolutionary War. The first post office was established in Easton on November 30, 1814, and opened for business on December 1st. The original town plat included land that today makes up part of downtown East Cleveland and much of Euclid Heights including Prospect Park South and Lake Erie Boulevard North
East Cleveland was founded in 1814 by the Potawatomi Indians. The city was named for General James Easton, who helped lead the U.S. military against Native American forces during the War of 1812. In 1870, East Cleveland became a municipality and was renamed Cleveland after Ohio's first governor, George Washington Carver. The city annexed neighboring municipalities in 1916 and 1924, making it one of the most populous cities in the United States at that time.
