The current name of the city was chosen to honor General James Fenton (1805-1875), who helped lead the American Civil War from Army headquarters in Philadelphia and then served as governor of Ohio from 1875-78. At one time it was part of Westchester County and had a population of 10,000 people; however, because it straddled two counties, its citizens were constantly at risk for being taxed by either side too heavily or not at all. In order to avoid this problem, Mayor John Pemberton lobbied hard for annexation into the larger city of Cleveland so that East Cleveland could be developed as an economically powerful center within its own boundaries instead ofaddering to other municipalities while risking their tax bases vital to their continued existence. Finally, on February 15, 1909 when City Council voted 3-0 to annex East Cleveland into Cleveland proper – marking the first time that annexation had ever been approved by City Council – Mayor Pemberton announced that he would never again let his municipality get annexed without also getting property rights back from those annexed townships/counties! In 1970s downtown businesses started closing down due to high costs associated with integrating new technology into old physical spaces whereas previous generations continued to operate older physical spaces using traditional methods such as handcrafted items or local craftsmen On July 1st, 2007 Eastern Gateway Mall closed effective June 30th after numerous allegations of fraud including overcharging shoppers for items purchased online City Councilman Donte Moncrief said “It’s been my experience that more than 90% (of mall sales) are conducted without customers ever coming inside” The closure caused approximately $10 million worth of damage To date there has not been any successful effort to resurrect or reopen Eastern Gateway Mall A redevelopment project has been announced but no progress has been made since then
