East Cleveland, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The population was 509,291 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become East Cleveland was first settled by Native Americans in 1788. The first European to arrive in what is now East Cleveland was Nicholas Flournoy, who built a trading post on the site where present-day downtown stands. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson and his army destroyed Fort Erie on Lake Erie in what is now downtown East Cleveland after its defenders surrendered without a fight. At this time, most of what is today East Cleveland was rural land east of town along the shoreline of Lake Erie. In 1837, John Atherton donated an acre (0.80 km²) for use as a public square in honor of his wife Lucy Atherton Bowersox-Hancock ( niece of President James K. Polk). This square became known as Atherton Park after him and it later became home to several businesses including Jardine's After completing construction on her namesake house at 4500 Euclid Avenue in 1841, Katharine Graham moved into 5th Ward Hall with her husband Charles Stewart Mott Jr., one of America's richest men and co-founder (alongside Warren G Harding)of WMT International Inc., which later merged with GEICO to form GEICO/WMT Inc.. From this humble beginning, East Cleveland grew rapidly through commerce and civic engagement becoming one of the leading industrial cities in America during both World Wars II and beyond... After experiencing some rough times during the Great Depression however, growth resumed faster than average thanks to postwar stimulus programs such as creation of Eastern Time Zone

In 1840, East Cleveland became a town and in 1875 it became an incorporated city. The city experienced growth during the late 20th century as manufacturing jobs relocated to East Cleveland from other parts of Ohio. However, recent economic declines have led to a decrease in population and property values.
