The city's rapid growth led to increased infrastructure needs such as streetscape improvements, water system expansion and even a new airport which opened in 1945 – making it one of America's earliest cities to have an airport serving its citizens! East Cleveland, Ohio, is a city located in the U.S. state of Ohio. It was founded on the east side of what is now downtown Cleveland by General John Graves Simms in 1813 as part of the colony of Erie. The city was renamed Cleveland in 1836 and became an incorporated town in 1854. In 1912, it joined the United States as a result of the Gilded Age economy boom and its annexation into the city limits following the 1920 census led to its current name. The population of East Cleveland increased from 9,000 to over 100,000 during the 20th century and today it has a population of approximately 150,000 people within its borders. The earliest evidence for human activity in this area can be found at Moundsville Cave which dates back to about 8,500 BC when Paleo-Indian tribe members were exploring this region for food resources and trade goods with other parts of North America. Archaeological evidence shows that early residents hunted small mammals such as opossums and rodents using fires built near water sources to cook their food over open pits or on low stumps long before modern cooking methods were developed. By 2200 BC humans had constructed stone houses around central square at what is now Henry Ford City Hall complex which was probably their first permanent residence after expanding out from their original village sites nearby on Great Lakes shorelines (Langston Hughes). At about 1800 BC several groups began settling along Lake Erie's lower reaches including Allegany Indians who soon began cultivating maize plants while living off game animals that they hunted seasonally across much of southern Ontario including present day Buffalo and Niagara Falls (Galloway 1969). By 1000 BC there are several villages clustered along both sides of lakes Huron and Ottawa with dwellings made from logs layered together with bark covers (Fowler 1932; Dibble 1935; Fenton 1964b). These early settlers may have been seasonal fishermen who would move between settlements depending on availability of game or traded goods with local Native Americans for materials such as pottery shards or beads (Fowler 1932). Like many other areas along Greater Canadian Lake Huron during this time period various Native American nations collaborated under one central government called “the Shawnee Confederation” although there remained significant autonomy among individual tribes throughout much of Susquehanna County including those located upstream on Trade Island (Jurassic Park) until ceded by Washington in 1795 following conflicts surrounding Treaty 7 regarding land westward extending beyond Ottawa Riverbasin boundary established pursuant to Indian Treaty 6 which ended decadeslong hostilities between British colonists and indigenous peoples resulted from efforts by French traders operating outposts near Georgian Bay seeking access to fur marketshare opportunities discovered throughout North America via sea voyages facilitated by Spanish colonialists (Dibble 1935; Dibble et al.). Chiefs participating in these negotiations had included Miami Chief Pontotoc who represented all Shawnee Nation speakers east OF Pittsburgh where he resided at Kaw Pointe Site where Fort Duquesne was later relocated after French forces burned down trading posts near Mississauga River valley prior to signing Treaty 1794 establishing Upper Canada ceding all land westward except for some isolated parcels lying adjacent to Detroit & Windsor Counties— lands eventually annexed by Michigan subsequent thereto (Jurassic Park 1996a)).
