East Cleveland is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 25,393 at the 2010 census. East Cleveland is the second-largest city in Cuyahoga County after Bridgeport. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders and missionaries in 1701. For many years, it was part of the Northwest Territory of Kentucky under British rule. In 1803, Ohio became a U.S. state and East Cleveland became its capital. The first mayor of East Cleveland was John Richardson (1795-1856). In 1868, the town of Shaker Heights annexed the village of East Cleveland and surrounding farms to form their new municipality. On November 3 that year, voters approved a charter for Shaker Heights that allowed it to be an independent municipality with its own police force and budgeting authority within three years or face annexation by East Cleveland again. In 1903, Shaker Heights annexed Wickliffe Township which included most of what is now east side of downtown east into its boundaries as well as all but two blocks on southern border of today's east side - including what is now known as "Downtown" - making Shaker Heights her final annexation into East Cleveland proper before becoming an Independent City once again on November 3rd 1909 with Mayor Richards still leading the effort In 1920 when Ameritrade moved from Conshohocken to downtown east they built their headquarters on land that had been part of Wickliffe Township since 1903 . This building remains today one block south from where Ameritrade now stands downtown across FirstEnergy Field
