Dublin was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1792 as a small trading post on the Scioto River. It became a town in 1802 and was named for Charles Stewart Parnell, first Prime Minister of Ireland. The area now known as Dublin was first settled by Native Americans about two thousand years ago. At one time there were three villages located in what is now downtown Dublin: Chagrin Falls, Onondaga Hill and Westville.[1] One account suggests that these villages may have been built near each other to trade goods with one another or with traders from neighboring Canada who came through the region on their way to find new lands.[2][3] By 1700, however, most of what is now downtown Dublin had been developed. The first European to visit what is now downtown Dublin was French fur trader Francois-René La Salle in 1792,[4] during his exploration of northeastern Ohio seeking new land for France. He described the site as "a very good spot"[5] and decided to establish a trading post here instead of farther upriver where he thought more reliable water resources would be available. La Salle's post served as a base from which he explored much of present-day eastern Ohio including parts that are today Dayton.[6][7] In addition to serving as a stopover on his travels, La Salle also traded goods with local tribes such as the Wyandots (Wyandotte) people[8][9] and Shawnees (Cherokee). His discovery helped begin construction on what would become Cincinnati—the first major American settlement in this area—in 1793.[10] With early development comes growth; by 1800 Chagrin Falls had grown into one of Dayton's largest settlements while Westville had become an influential military outpost commanding access to rich natural resources located near present-day Springfield.[11][12][13][14] By 1830 all but two square miles (40 km2) of what is now downtown Dublin were zoned for housing development following annexation by Dayton Municipal Court Act No. 9 December 1830,[15] although some areas remain undeveloped today[16], testifying to how quickly urban growth began developing along both banks of the Scioto River during this period.] In 1839–1840 Captain William Haines traveled through central Ohio looking for new land for his US Fur Company[17].
