Dover, Ohio is a small town in the heart of the state of Ohio. The population was 8,873 at the 2010 census. It is located in Holmes County on the Scioto River and it is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Dover's history dates back to 1812 when it was founded by General David Dixon as a trading post on the Delaware River. In 1814, Dover became an incorporated town with a population of around 100. In 1870, Dover became one of four towns in Holmes County to be made up of areas already annexed by Cleveland from other counties. A major industry in Dover until the mid-20th century was agriculture; today most businesses are located within downtown Dover or its adjoining suburbs. The first settler to arrive in what would become Dover was James Adair who arrived in 1792 with his family from Scotland and built a cabin on an old mill pond near present day Portsmouth. By 1800, there were about 30 settlers living in what would become Dover Township including five families from Scotland and three families from England (Adair, Burnett and Campbell). The first school house was built in 1802 just east of present day Center Street which served as a log cabin until replaced by a more permanent structure two years later which still stands today. From this humble beginning, many important facets of local culture and economy were developed such as: agricultural production, trade with other parts of the United States and Canada, transportation through waterways (the Scioto River being especially beneficial), civic activism (such as organizing opposition to heavy gold mining operations) and much more! In 1813 when America declared war against Great Britain after their Invasion of Canada, General David Dixon decided that he would not leave his post on the banks of the Delaware River unguarded but instead establish himself as commander at Dover Point where he could monitor British activity upstream while providing cover for his soldiers ashore! After several months Of hard work he had established himself both militarily and economically at Dover Point - an important strategic position for him given America's fledgling role in world affairs! For over 25 years he garrisoned this strategically important spot before finally retiring at age 75 due to health conditions which included arthritis! The community owes much gratitude to General Dixon for establishing their townsite hereabouts - something that cannot be fully appreciated without experiencing it firsthand! Of particular note are two holiday events that take place annually during September/October - One is called "Dover Days" celebrated throughout central Ohio featuring various activities throughout downtown including arts & crafts marketside along withz food trucks serving delicious picnic fare; while another celebrates "Stampede Day" which includes numerous rides & games followed by dinner at one or more locations within Downtown area before dancing all night long at Amherst Tavern prior to dawn.. Both events generate significant economic impact within their respective communities!

Dover was also the site of several battles during the American Revolution, including Battle of Brandywine in 1777 and Battle of Monmouth in 1778. In 1814, Dover became a state capital and remained so until 1907. In 1971, Dover merged with neighboring Wilmington to form the current city of Delaware City.
