Dover, Ohio is a city located in the United States. It was founded on July 4, 1814 by a group of pioneer farmers and their families. The area that now makes up Dover was first inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Shawnee tribe. In 1824, Dover was given to the United States as part of the Adams–Onion Treaty. The city grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location between Cincinnati and Cleveland. On October 6, 1898, Dover became the site of one of World War I's largest military engagements when American forces attempted to dislodge an invading French army from within Belgium. The battle resulted in heavy American losses and helped alter European attitudes towards America. After World War II, Dover experienced rapid growth as a suburb of Cleveland. However, it has since regained its status as a vibrant community with strong cultural traditions and close ties to its larger metropolitan area.

Many local businesses have passed away since then but some such as Strouds Tire & Rubber Company still operate today as a major employer in Dover including aspects such as heavy manufacturing, education and research related to rubber products

Dover is a small town in Shiawassee County, Ohio, United States. The population was 953 at the 2000 census. Dover is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. It is bordered to the east by Uniontown and to the south by Ironton. The first permanent settler in Dover was John Bacon who arrived in 1797. early settlers were Methodists and others from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. There were no schools until 1827 when one was built on land donated by Major General James Wilkinson. In 1872, Dover had three stores and two sawmills; however, they closed within a few years because of low business demand and competition from larger towns in that area. The last store reopened in 1984 after being bought by Lewis Distributing Co., which continued to operate it for several years before it closed as well. A post office called Dover was established in 1827, and remained open until 1907. The first mayor of Dover was Samuel Gahagan (1836-1907). According to the 2002 census, there are 535 residents living in Dover Township including: 471 Republicans (92%); 131 Democrats (8%); seven Independents (3%); five Muslims (3%); four whites who identified themselves as white European American (2%); one black person; one Asian person; and one Native American person
