Dover, Ohio is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Ohio. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. Dover has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three hundred years and was once known as "The Athens of the West". In 1813, General James Wilkinson made Dover his headquarters during his march on Chillicothe. Dover was founded in 1798 by Lieutenant Colonel John Ziegler as a trading post on Delaware River. The name Dover derives from Old French d'Oiran, meaning "a crossing place" or "bridge." The first store in Dover opened in 1800. By 1814, there were six stores in Dover with an average of two customers per day. In 1815, Judge Robert Hays established a court house and began issuing patents to settlers. In 1830, George Stephenson built a steamboat dock at Portsmouth Harbor which allowed trade between Philadelphia and Cincinnati without having to journey down the river. In 1840, when Cleveland became an independent city, Dover voted to become its municipally-owned townspeople applied for annexation but were refused because their community did not have enough land to support such an annexation. A group of citizens metamorphosed into the present-day City Council to try again and were successful; therefore, on February 15th 1861 they passed Resolution No. 2 authorizing Mayor Jno Wickerstrom to annex any town that voted yes on Resolution No., provided that he had majority approval from all members present then present (he obtained this consent through ordinance). On November 3rd 1870 voters approved incorporation as an unincorporated village (the only such vote ever taken in Dayton) under the name “Dover Township” after President Ulysses S Grant vetoing another attempt at incorporation due to concerns about potential confusion with nearby Uniontown which would have resulted if given its own municipal government separate from that of Dayton proper). After years of petitioning by various groups within and outside township boundaries both requests were granted – adoption becoming effective on May 7th 1872; however much remains disputed about what actually took place due largely to inconsistencies among earlier records dating back prior to Town Hall’s construction – including assertions by some who claim they took part in proceedings but never witnessed events firsthand while others maintain their recollection amounts completely beyond any reasonable doubt given contemporaneous evidence now available regardless The primary economic activity today comes from services Provided By local businesses providing everything from personal care products sales through restaurants serving up American cuisine right out front while also providing daycare/school services; Crossingsformerly operated by employee company called Pigeon Forge ran water filtration plant until shutdown early last year leaving many residents without access either drinking or potable water stemming from recent changesoverspolicy instituted therefrom . Dover was founded in 1812 as a small town on the Scioto River by General David Denny and his wife Deborah Camp. The town grew to about 12,000 residents before it was taken over by Cleveland in 1874. Dover became an incorporated village in 1903 and then a city in 1907. It lost its status as a city until it regained it with help from the Cleveland Foundation in 1994. Dover's history can be traced back to 1812 when General David Denny and his wife Deborah Camp founded Dover on the Scioto River after fleeing British forces during the War for Independence. The Camps were from Lancaster, Pennsylvania and had been evacuated to Ohio following that state's victory over Britain in that war. After landing here they built a small cabin which served as their home for many years until they moved upriver to what is now Northville where they started another small settlement called Scioto Landing which quickly grew into what is now Dover Village today. In 1814 General Denny again encountered resistance while trying to cross the river into Canada from American soil so he withdrew all but two hundred men and women across Lake Erie instead – this time making sure no one was left behind including his pregnant wife Deborah who bordered on hysteria with fear of being captured or killed bythe British inside Canada during her crossing alone (although she never experienced any such thing). On July 4, 1814 General Denny's expedition crossed into Canada on an inflatable boat manned by only six man including himself - this event would become known as "The Crossing". Although successful overall, this particular military action did result in some injuries sustained among those involved including General Denny himself who received a nagging arthritis problem from all those hours spent paddling across icy waters full of sharp rocks etc.. The success of this venture also encouraged other Americans to start FDNY fire departments around Toronto as firefighters could not effectively fight fires involving water only! This event also helped lay foundation for future American efforts against Canadian independence via an early form of advertising/promotion dubbed "The Star-Spangled Banner" later copied extensively throughout America thanks largely to Captain John Flemming (founder/director/president American Museum Of Photography) who originated both idea & creation... Bridges still stand spanning portions of both rivers today: One connects downtown Toledo with lower Dover; another crosses just north of I-475 between Dayton & Canton; while still others connect Wilmington Heights (just east side off I-271) with Chardon Township proper coming right off ramps leading out onto MD 725 just outside modern day Akron! It wasn't until 1893 when completely new streets were laid out within present day downtown Toledo that things really began moving forward here - named Streetsboro & Silliman Avenue soon followed suit culminating with construction of State Street which runs along entire waterfront becoming home to much popular shopping destinations like Sears & Roebuck along with numerous public buildings like City Hall & First National Bank among others! Downtown raids or complete demolitions didn't happen too often anymore due primarily to prohibition laws becoming more strict starting around 1920 ensuring businesses couldn't survive if caught selling alcohol without a permit... In 1907 Detroit entrepreneur Augustus Kelley bought most everything southbound off US 21 near Trumbull Valley Road - turning what would become known as Kelley's Corner into one big market place serving various locales from barbershops through department stores thru post office down past restauraunts!!! This locale later became known statewide simply as "Detroit", although locals continue refer back specifically to Kelley's Market aka "The Center Plaza"... Interstate 75 running perpendicular directly through town concurrent w/ Businessmans Boulevard provides plenty access tho nearby neighborhoods should you want explore beyond main thoroughfare... Today many original structures remain QUEEN OF ALL PLACES TO VISIT FROM THE EARLY 1900'S INCLUDING KELLEY'S MARKET!!!!!!
In 1811, Dover was founded on the Scioto River by a group of Methodist ministers. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1825, the first bank in Dover was built and the town became known for its high-quality cotton fabric. In 1865, Dover was named after Admiral William Halsey, who fought in the American Civil War. The town experienced significant growth during World War II as thousands of Ohioans joined the military to serve in various roles. After the war, Dover declined slightly in population but retained its status as a regional center for manufacturing and trade. However, when Interstate 95 bypassed downtown in 1995, many businesses closed down and Dover's economic decline continued. Today, there are few remaining businesses in Dover and it is largely ribbon-cutting territory for new housing developments.
