At one point during World War II, it held more than 12000 people within its limits including 500 soldiers and 300 civilians working at various naval facilities located nearby such as shipyards; aircraft factories; ammunition plants; barracks; Storehouses No. 2 & 3; pump house No. 1 & 2; storage shed #2 & 3 etc., as well as artillery positions on nearby hillsides overlooking Portsmouth Naval Shipyard itself A large airfield facility consisting of three interconnected runways with taxiways and parallel runways at right angles to each other were built adjacent to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard between 1941-1944 which served both AmericanAAF units stationed there as well as RAF squadrons flying Spitfires over London during that time period In 1944-1945 USS "Portsmouth" collided with USS "New Orleans" while they were anchored off Calais Beach Maine resulting in both vessels sinking with many men lost including Commanding Officer (CO) Commodore JG Richards who managed to swim ashore successfully before being taken prisoners by German forces
