The history of firearms in Dover, Ohio dates back to the 1800s. Firearms were first used in this community by farmers and hunters to defend themselves from animals and other predators. In 1837, the first gun store was established in Dover. This store served as a source of firearms for the local residents and also sold ammunition. However, the gun store's activities ceased around 1897 when it was replaced by a grocery store. The grocery store operated until 1951 when it closed its doors for good. Consequently, the first firearm-related incident in Dover occurred in 1837 when a person purchased some ammunition from a gun store located in town.
Dover, Ohio is a town in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. Dover was founded by settler George Wilkinson in 1814. It became a city in 1907. In 2000, Dover voters approved an ordinance declaring November 3rd as "National Donut Day". The history of Dover goes back to 1814 when George Wilkinson settled near what is now Dover Township on the Scioto River. He named his first land grant after his native country of England - Great Britain's Kent County - and built a home thereon called "Wilkinson House." For many years this was the only house in the township and it stood until 1868 when another settler, John Hargrave erected a log cabin on the same site. This latter cabin served as the nucleus for what would become today's downtown business district of which Dowling Street is but one example. Dover began to grow rapidly due to its location on the Scioto River where goods could be transported easily and cheap from Columbus and other surrounding townships. There were also several mills located around town which supplied flour, oilseed meal and other necessary ingredients for manufacturing products such as shoes and hats. By 1920 the number of businesses had increased to twenty-eight with weekly payrolls averaging $1,000 each! During World War II much of town was destroyed by bombing raids; however most buildings including all of the mills were spared because they were being used as munitions plants or storage facilities at that time!Today many restaurants remain open along with some large stores including Meineke automobile dealership adjacent to Main Street which has been operating continuously since 1951! Downtown also contains several banks (One Bankruptcy Court still functions) and two churches (Stantons Methodist Episcopal Church dating back to 1892 while First Baptist Church dates back even earlier). One notable resident during this time was local artist Roy Lichtenstein who spent his summers living in nearby Mentor while he continued working on his major works at The Cleveland Museum of Art! In recent years there have been numerous efforts made by residents to revive downtown business districts including resurrecting Dowling Street between Main & State Streets along with Hangman's Alley running perpendicular thereto; adding more shops and restaurants onto Broadway north thereof; developing new parkland east of Interstate 495 off High Street; increasing funding for infrastructure projects like streetlights and bicycle lanes etc.;and implementing plans for an eventual renovation/update/replacement of all fifty-six streets within three miles radius!!!!!!
