Delaware is a small, Midwestern state in the United States. The population was 713 at the 2010 census. Delaware is one of the states that make up the Ohio River Valley and its capital is Dover. The area now known as Delaware was first populated by the Lenape people, who were displaced by European arrivals in the early 17th century. In 1681, English colonists founded Fort Christina on an island in what is now Delaware Bay, after victory over French forces in the Battle of New York, King George III granted Pennsylvania to his brother-in-law, Jameson (the Elder) for his support against France. With this acquisition, Pennsylvania became part of Great Britain and Delaware became a separate colony within British America. The Dutch began to settle in what is now southern Delaware in 1636 and gradually gained control over much of present day Pennsylvania and southeastern Maryland. They also built up a strong trading post at Smyrna on the Susquehanna River which served as a focal point for their commerce with England and Europe. In 1684, during King William III’s War with France, General Monmouth recaptured Jamestown from Spanish troops and establish himself as head of British North America with headquarters at Philadelphia. His attempt to force Lord Baltimore into hand failed when Baltimore refused to submit to Monmouth’s rule without representation from Maryland. As a result of these events, most English colonists living along both banks of the Ohio River chose independence from Great Britain rather than subject themselves to Scottish or Irish rule under Queen Anne I (1673–1702). Meanwhile, northward-moving French traders had been expanding their trade downriver since before Europeans arrived in what is today Delaware County; they called this land la Nouvelle Amérique (the new continent). When English settlers began arriving along both banks of the Ohio River during this time frame they encountered these French traders and began calling this area New Holland because it still seemed like another world away from their homeland where things were more traditional such as hunting deer on Sundays! As development continued on both sides of the river there was constant conflict between Native Americans – known then as “The Potawatomi” – who lived near where water power potential lay undiscovered and white newcomers who wanted access to all that nature had to offer; chief among these outsiders was Hugh Nicholsony (1685–1759), an official surveyor appointed by Governor John Peter St Clair (1595–1649) to map out lands west of Cleveland Harbor for settlement by Europeans after he discovered rich coal seams near Muskingum Lake! Nicholsony traveled through northeastern Ohio later that year mapping out areas including parts now occupied by Delmarva Peninsula & Rhode Island!
