Although some people continue to claim that General Washington actually landed at Lewes on Sussex Beach – situated just across Long Beach Creek – this remains unverified.,[1] only 5 miles (8 km) southeast of where Philadelphia now stands,[2][3] much later romanticised accounts began appearing depicting him landing at what is today known asReading Terminal Market Place,[4][5] although no evidence exists supporting this story.[6][7] In 1795 James Kapp made an unexpected discovery along with five other men off Sandy Hook Island when they lost sight of land due to bad weather while exploring offshore waters near present day Newark Liberty International Airport: they found sandbars lined with valuable coal seams that would become known as Kapp's Mine.[8][9] This event helped spur commercial development around Sandy Hook Harbor including wharves built by Samuel de Champlain & Sons Shipping Company[10]) until 1903 when navigation improvements ended up blocking access entirely leaving mines inactive for more than 50 years.[11][12].
