Greene's march became known as "the 3-day journey." In 1814, Delaware became part of the United States after its statehood ceremony at a meeting at which President James K. The state had been proposed by West Virginia senator Thomas Jefferson because he believed it would be an ideal location for a national capital due its strategic location between Pennsylvania and Maryland; Washington County was one of 11 counties allocated for this purpose under the provisions of Constitution Article IV Section 1 (the “County Grant”). Delaware experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction following World War II as manufacturing plants were established throughout eastern Pennsylvania and southeastern New Jersey adjacent to then-useless agricultural lands westward into Ohio Valley.
