Defiance is a town in Perry County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in Defiance were French colonists who arrived by boat from Quebec in 1795. They named their settlement after the nearby village of Deffiance, France. The first store and post office opened in 1814. In 1825, a canal was built through Defiance and it became an important transportation stop on the Cuyahoga River. In 1865, two young men named James Wickersham and John Haggerty established a station on the Union Pacific Railroad near what is now Defiance Center shopping mall to provide goods for residents of Dayton and other nearby towns. The town's first school was erected in 1870 and its first Methodist church was built in 1875. In 1902, voters passed a ordinance establishing a city government which helped make Defiance one of the most Improved Towns in Ohio within five years. During World War II, Defiance demonstrated its patriotism by becoming one of six American cities to participate in "Hullabaloo" – an Allied propaganda campaign that encouraged citizens to support war efforts by contributing items such as gasoline and food to local grocery stores

Defiance, Ohio was an American frontier town located in Clear Township, Defiance County, Ohio. The first European to live in the area was Nicholas de Champlain in 1701. In 1813, the United States acquired control of much of what is now Ohio from Great Britain and it became part of the new country as a result. By 1830, Defiance had over 1,000 residents and was one of the most important trading points in central Ohio. It functioned as a center for transportation and communication within central Ohio as well as between eastern Kentucky and western Pennsylvania. In 1838, when tensions between the United States and Great Britain boiled over into open warfare known asthe War of 1812, Defiance sided with America and helped lead the fight against British forces. After the war ended in 1814, many German immigrants arrived in Defiance from Upper Michigan hoping to find opportunity in this new country. They quickly assimilated into American society and contributed significantly to Defiance’s growth during its early years
