The city's first store opened in 1824 and served as the nucleus around which additional businesses grew up including feed stores, schools, hotels and churches over time. In 1830, Reverend John Fenton organized a Methodist church here and soon began hosting baptisms and weddings for Trumbull County residents. A flourishing agricultural economy led tophaltee production becoming an important local industry during this time; however by 1840 it had all but disappeared due to competition from railroads coming through town. However following construction of the Erie Canal in 1825-26 Defiance's economy took off again with increased trade between Tiffin (then called Canandaigua) OH and Cleveland Heights OH via shipping channels developed along the canal route During World War IIDefiance was home to many military personnel stationed at Fort Recovery (nowdefunct). Many items produced here – such as munitions - were used to make war materials available throughout America

Defiance, Ohio (sometimes called Independence) was an unincorporated community in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. It was located on the east side of the Tugaloo River. The post office at Defiance was first established in 1836 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The community grew up around a military fortification built by Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War to protect his supply line from Confederate attack. The fortifications were destroyed by Union forces in 1865, but nearby farmland continued to be used for agricultural purposes until after World War II. In 1951, a small shopping center and service station were built near the fortifications; however, these failed to take off and were closed within a few years. In 1971, defying local prohibition laws which had been in place since 1853, citizens of Defiance constructed a small brewery known as "Defiance Brewing" on their own land northeast of the fortifications. The brewery quickly gained popularity among locals and made enough money to keep operations going even while prohibition returned to effect in 1976. In 1984, bypassing Trumbull County proper altogether and establishing itself as an independent city within Trumbull County under its own government structure", Defiance became one of only two communities (the other being Celina) in Trumbull County that did not switch over to county government following the collapse of statewide Republican rule following the 1984 presidential election; the other community being Ashland Township just north of town on State Route 12). As such, it continues to enjoy significant autonomy despite having no municipal services provided by either county or state authorities: all police departments are served by sheriff's deputies instead of local officers; trash collection is handled by individual residents rather than via regular township/county pickup; taxes are levied through individual tax districts instead of consolidated county ballots; streetlights are installed withouturchandoning per township ordinance requirements; playgrounds and pools exist but are not funded or operated with public funds as they are municipally funded through private donations from individuals/ families who live within respective neighborhoods/communitiesrather than through township coffers}; Overall, this unique form of government provides considerable advantages over more traditional forms: it allows for greater separation between municipal functions and those carried out by county officials – something that is not easily possible with more typical forms of government where these functions merge together; Finally, it also makes it easier for municipalities to experiment with new governance structures without fear that they will lose their autonomy should they fail to meet certain criteria set forth by county officials.;
In Defiance, Ohio, a slave uprising took place on July 12, 1855. The slaves had been protesting for two weeks when they were met with violence from theirowners. A group of whites led by George Ransom decided to take action and began shooting at the slaves. Five people were killed and dozens more were wounded. This event is commonly known as the Defiance Rebellion.
