Defiance was a small town in Muskingum County, Ohio, at the time of the American Civil War. It was located on the Susquehanna River and 10 miles (16 km) north of Youngstown. The town was founded by John Defiance in 1813 as a log settlement on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. In 1814, Defiance became an Indian trading post and later a village. It remained an isolated community until it became part of the new United States in 1783. In 1861, Defiance was abandoned by its residents and taken over by Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. The town continued to be abandoned until it was destroyed by Union forces in 1865.
