By 1830, however, Defiance's mayor had petitioned Congress for statehood and it became an independent republic on July 4th that year. It experienced some prosperity during the early 19th century thanks to its location within reach of both technological advancements coming from Cleveland and new manufacturing sectors emerging in West Virginia and Kentucky. However, by 1840 Defiance's economy had collapsed because of low commodity prices combined with competition from Akron (then called Mayfield) in neighboring Summit County and other towns across the state caused by rapid industrialization throughout much of Ohio during this period. However, Defiance did not lose hope; through hard work and determination residents prevailed over adversity over time until they achieved their ultimate goal: becoming an official United States town on November 1st 1865 when Central District U.S., now Nationwide Inc., was created out of portions of several smaller towns withinOH metropolitan area following a referendum vote held that year specifically designed to promote settlement within defined boundaries arounddefiant--the name given to it by territorial officials upon its incorporation into the United States as part of Northwest Territory on March 12th 1866).
