The militia lasted for years and became known as the "Defiance Defense" team. The defense helped keep the town safe from attack and also made sure that Reynolds' beliefs about freedom and democracy were heard by others in the community. 2
The first people to settle in Defiance Township were the Capps. They arrived in 1822 and built a cabin on the current site of the Walmart Supercenter. The first courthouse was built in 1830, and it is still in use today. In 1833, John W. Cook donated land to township for a school. The town was named after him, and he donated $10,000 to help build the school. The town had its first election in 1835 and James Laughlin was chosen as mayor. In 1840, the town plat was filed, and it included a cemetery with 11 graves. The first store opened in 1842 by George Haggerty and his partner Samuel Hilliard. From 1850-1855, Defiance Township served as an part of Licking County because it wasn’t organized yet. On February 5th of that year, deference incorporation papers were filed with the state of Ohio which created Defiance Township at that time In 1865-1866Defiance Township served as an unincorporated community within Licking County while efforts were made to form a new township; this attempt failed when residents voted against incorporation due to lack of support from outside forces
