The first settler in Defiance was George Stephenson who moved to what is now Defiance Township in 1814. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Muskegon River and named it "Eagle Ford". In 1835, Henry Kapp organized a township committee and began buying lots from farmers and settlers in Defiance Township for $10 per acre (equivalent to ). On October 17, 1835, Kapp laid out a new town called "Defiance" on land his father had donated two years earlier. The town received its first charter from the state of Michigan on November 3, 1835. The town grew rapidly due to its location near other small towns and because it offered easy access to transportation such as roads and canals. By 1850, Defiance had over 1,000 residents and was considered one of the largest villages in Michigan. Defiance, Ohio is an unincorporated community in the town of Defiance, Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. It lies along the Scioto River north of Akron. The post office at Defiance was established in 1828, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1934. The first white settlers to arrive in what is now Defiance were three brothers who named themselves Johnstown, Jamesstown and Davidstown. They arrived on horseback from Pennsylvania on October 5, 1792. After a journey of more than 100 miles they reached the Scioto River and built a log cabin there. The first settler to reside permanently in what is now Defiance was Nicholas Haggerty who purchased land east of the river from Johnstown Sr., brother of Nicholas Haggerty. In 1830 Nicholas Haggerty sold his land to William Ladds for $200 cash. Ladds laid out a town on the site which he named "Defiance" after his home state of Delaware (now Delaware).
