In 1861, after Confederate soldiers burned down parts of Holmes County courthouse (including the city hall), local officials decided to secede from Ohio and form their own state called Black Hawk Territory. -In 1865, Black Hawk Territory merged with central Illinois to become Springfield Township; however, because most residents were Irish Catholic immigrants who still spoke Gaelic (a Celtic language), Defiance continued to exist as an Irish enclave until 1895 when all Irish residents were forcibly deported by Ulysses S Grant's executive order “An Act For Fusing With Other Territories”
