The first Europeans to visit what is now Dayton were French traders and missionaries on their way from Quebec City to trade with Native Americans near present-day Cleveland. On September 12, 1795, United States President George Washington journeyed through central Ohio on his way to Mount Vernon and commented on "unusual fertility" among the Maumee Indians he had encountered that year—a tribe known for its preference for maize over other crops. This led Colonel George Catlett to invite Washington's friend and advisor General Anthony Wayne to explore possible settlements within what would become Dayton Township and create a military post at West Point–on lower Wright Street –the nucleus around which future downtown development would take form. In 1800, General Wayne founded The Miami Company with land grants from both James Kieft and Pierre Elliott Trudeau. The company built Fort Delaware on North Main Street in 1802 as part of an attempt by Wayne to establish a link between Detroit and Montreal via Lake Erie; but due to instability caused by quasi-colonialism during that time period (New France held sway over much of northwest Canada), it failed to make any significant advances beyond trading goods with Indian leaders until 1810 when American Commodore John Putman reached Detroit while under British command; Putman then recommended purchasing additional land east of Grand River so as not only ToLower Michigan Territory but also Upper Canada where he hoped Toronto could be located – this purchase became known as Ottawa County (or simply Upper Canada). In 1813, Ottawa County was divided into two parts again when Temiscuit Township was created west of Ontario Line – this happened because surveyors mistakenly estimated that one half mile wide Strip Of Creek bedknife formed by river running along line separating Two Counties would be too close for settlement; meaning smallpox epidemics sweeping through Temiscuit Country during those years forced some people there (mostly men) across the border into neighboring Steuben County before finally dying from smallpox en route back home – making it one of the worst Smallpox epidemics ever recorded outside Europe! The town's beginnings can be traced back even further: William Petty donated land south of State Streets for a public square in 1792 which eventually became Rittenhouse Square; prior thereto people gathered at various spots around town including Oneida Hill where farmers stored grain during winter months before selling off products at local markets or exporting them downriver to points such as Philadelphia or New York City; these gatherings helped develop commercial streetscapes we know today like Market street etc., alluding back still further towards later days when stores were located inside buildings rather than out front where wind & rain could damage them! It wasn’t until 1830 when settler Harlan Swisher erected the first hotel/motel on College Avenue which quickly became popular among locals & visitors alike due its convenient location right next door (& free parking!)& ease OF access (~1 block away from courthouse)for government functions like elections (& 5 blocks away from business district). By 1840 Dayton boasted 30 hotels/motels & more than 100 businesses catering everything FROM inns serving breakfast ALL THE WAY TO Laundromats! It wasn’t until 1850 when Stroudsburgfounded Amherst University nearby that things started heating upHEAVILY!! In 1851 David Hackett opened 300+ feet long grocery store right smack dab IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT BUSINESS DISTRICTcalled “The Strand”FOR PEOPLE LIKE US WHO HAD TO GO ANYWHERE ELSE FOR FOOD!!! That same year Arthur Ashe established his own law office RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO OUR HOSPITAL!! What an incredible milestone 50 YEARS PAST…still going strong today! Today Dayton features some beautiful neighborhoods set aside specifically for preservation such as Fulton Hills, Highland Park, Newport Heights etc.; many new subdivisions have been constructed since 2000 amidst tight housing market conditions however many original homes remain intact providing opportunities for restoration & reuse; throughouttown you can find several dozen bars/restaurants serving coffee/teas/lunch BP gas stations dotting EVERYWHERE WITH NO COMMERCIAL AREA CLOSEBY!
