During World War II, Duffey Steel Works produced military equipment including tanks and airplanes; this led to increased residential development around Duffey Park in central downtown Dayton during that time period. Today, much of downtown Dayton remains commercialized with several large office buildings completed since 2000 adjacent to riverfront parks which provide ample parkland for residents to enjoy while overlooking downtowns major thoroughfares like Fifth Street or Spring Street.. Dayton, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Dayton County. Dayton is also home to Brown University and Wright State University, both major research universities in central Ohio. The city has a rich history dating back to 1796 when it was founded as a small village on the east Side of Dayton River by Solomon Grayback and other early settlers. The first post office was established at 9th Street and High Street in 1830; it changed its name to Dayton soon after becoming independent from Cleveland School District (now Warren Local School District). In 1840, John Fenton purchased 3 acres (1 hectare) near downtown for $100 which he called "Fenton’s Grove". This property would come into use for most of downtown development until 1964 when it was annexed by City Hall pursuant to an agreement between then Mayor William Gee (D) and then City Manager Charles McFarlane (R). On October 15, 1924 – just three months after World War I ended – President Coolidge issued Executive Order No 4782 which directed all municipalities within his administration "to take such measures as may be necessary for their general welfare" including "the erection or reconstruction" of public Works Administration buildings located within their boundaries--a directive which served as impetus for much downtown redevelopment thereafter through private donations as well as government funds available through WPA programs throughout the 1930s into the 1940s In 1928–29 Mayor James Cavanaugh erected a 1-mile high water tower on Main Street between West Third Avenue and Cedar Road which provided water services for many adjacent businesses until 1954 when Toledo hooker service replaced water services municipally owned by Dayton officials beginning July 1st that year In 1951–52 Progress Energy Company built several large gas tanks at various locations around town providing power for businesses until 1984 when local utility employees retired those tanks citing costs associated with maintaining them beyond their original designed lifespan During World War II more than 2 million military personnel were stationed here including members from Patton's Army Ground Forces Command Headquarters whose officers' mess continues today named Patton Center after General George Smedley Patton Jr., Commanderof American Expeditionary Forces Europe during WWII
