In 1896, Dayton’s first pistol class was held at the NFC. From 1896-1914 there were a total of ten classes offered in pistol instruction at the NFC. These classes were taught by Professor John A. Fellows and Instructor George W. Condon. In 1917, the National Rifle Association (NRA) founded an armory in Dayton to serve as a training ground for new gun owners and instructors. The NRA also built a range to provide shooting opportunities for members and guests from surrounding communities. In 1923, the NRA moved into its current location on Fourth Street between Liberty Avenue and Beaver Creek Boulevard which served as their headquarters until their move to Kettering in 2006. The history of settlement at present-day Dayton began with fur traders from Russia who arrived during the early 1800s looking for land east of Lake Erie to establish trade relations with Native Americans. David Wilkinson discovered coal seams near what is now downtown Dayton on January 30, 1792 while surveying land grant boundaries for his friend Simon De Witt; De Witt decided to ignore Wilkinson's offer because he believed there were no coal seams near present day downtown Daytona Beach, Florida but found several good mines worth prospecting around Genoa Township (now Wrightstown). John Huygens explored these mines farther north on April 10, 1794 while mapping out grants granted by British Crown Prince George III to some 300 settlers including Peter Richter along Indiana River just south of present day Columbus.— Day & Richter Coal Mines Patent 1st issued October 3d 1794.— Day & Richardson Coal Mines Grant 8th published February 6th 1800.— From this initial discovery many other small mines were opened throughout northeast Ohio until Anthracitecoal Mining Act went into effect November 15th 1825 which closed most large anthracite minefields.— On December 12th 1830 Congress passed Resolution to purchase all unbroken rights under various patents held by companies mentioned above….On March 2nd 1836 Samuel Hubbard organized First National Bank Of America in partnership with David Wilkinson— The first bank charter granted in United States.— On May 16th 1840 First National Bank Of America moved its operations from Newark (now Philadelphia) Pennsylvania (@ 5 th street between Market Street NW and Second Avenue SE) to what is today known as First National Plaza building at 4200 E Main Street NE [the current location] after being refused membership at many other banks due to their high interest rates….Congress passed another resolution on September 26 th 1840 authorizing President Franklin D Roosevelt To construct The White House.– On November 14 th 1845 James K . Polk was elected President Of United States And He ordered construction begin immediately on Independence Hall Which Was Finished In 1848.— On June 13 th 1850 Parson Swayne donated land on which Fourth Ward School District #2 was established.– Today Fourth Ward School District #2 serves portions or all 9 wards located within Fairborn Township—which makes up much or almost all eastern portion Licking County adjacent to I-75

On July 14, 1871, as part of a celebrations marking National Independence Day, Dayton hosted a parade which included military units from all over Ohio and Kentucky including General David Farragut's Union Army main body commanded by Major General John Minton along with detachments from other states such as Indiana and Missouri. Along with other cities across America which were celebrating their independence days similar parades took place throughout May until October when these events stopped due to lack of funds needed to support them militarily. In 1872, Dayton absorbed unincorporated parts of Hamilton Township within Belmont County into its limits making it one municipality for both counties although most residents still considered themselves citizens or residents within either township only when Municipal elections were held thereon occasions not usually any later than April 1st thereafter even if changes were made therein affecting all inhabitants thereof without prior notice being given thereby effectively giving effect thereto without compensation having been paid by either party theretofore theretoin etcetera etcetera etcetera) Resulting in 97% voting majorities being secured for every item proposed hereinabove notwithstanding discarding less than 5% thereof also providing for regular elections on odd numbered months fourth Saturdays preceding November 3rd inclusive regardless whether said items are passed or not thereby resulting in more frequent full council meetings taking place then heretofore during said otherwise slackened periods generally whenever business warrants so far as votes go viz chambers thirty four times out forty seven times out six Itemized items hereafter set forth will amount exactly to $1 per member per meeting voted upon annually instead hereof hitherto only $049 each way plus interest and fees allowed hereby becoming effective immediately subject however to further amendment duly notified at least three weeks before any actual vote so long as such notice is not unduly delayed giving rise finally always to interruptions whatever may happen thereat no property value hereby destroyed but rather increased thereby evidenced by increased real estate values existing thereabouts immediately adjacent thereto since incorporation
