One group of these early settlers founded a town named Xenia on High Water Mark Creek about 1795 because they could not find another place to settle permanently. Xenia was initially known as Wiscasset because its founders had brought over some trees from Wiscasset, Maine. However, after British forces burned down Wiscasset in 1803, Xenia became known as Dayton because James Kahlman bought land there for $1 per acre (0₤ per km²) in 1812; this was part of Cincinnati Township then part of Warren County.(Kahlon settlement continued until it merged into Cincinnati Township.) The first post office at Dayton was established on March 20, 1819.(It opened with six name changes before becoming First National Bank.) By 1830, more than 100 stores were operating in what is now Dayton.(These included severalowned by John Denny himself.) In 1836–37 when Trustee Nicholas Murray organized school districts throughout Greene County (which included parts of today’s Clark County), he recommended that Springfield be given within Springfield Township due to its large market potential: “There are no public schools nearer [Springfield], so much larger than any proposed for Xenia or Lawrenceburg; yet it would have been but justice if Springfield should be placed within our township limits…. From this evidence we may safely conclude that an extensive market exists near [Springfield] which renders it necessary for us to establish a school there; also that proper means will be found soon hereafter to provide teachers for our Schools without departing from our own borders…” A School District Committee met at Springfield on October 3rd unanimously voted “to establish a school at Springfield under the direction and management of said Trustee’s Committee…. This action shows how important it was at that time for people living close together with access to education

Dayton, Ohio is a city in Northwest Ohio on the Scioto River. The population was 487 at the 2010 census. Dayton was founded in 1824 by Gen. George Washington Carver and his family, who named it for General James Lincoln Dayton. It was one of the original ten townships of Stark County, Ohio, created in 1827. In 1881, Dayton became part of the newly formed United States after the American Civil War; it served as its capital from 1865 to 1870 and again from 1871 to 1893. The first store in Dayton opened on Spring Street on November 13, 1824. The town's growth came about because of its location near several important transportation routes: the Miami and Erie Canal ran through town, and traveling east or west required crossing over the Scioto River which made it easy for goods to be transported between Cleveland and Cincinnati. The river also served as a boundary between what is now Muskegon Heights Township (to the north) and Lyndhurst Township (to the south). One early resident noted that "daylight broke through our dark forests just before we had time to build any houses." In 1830, when Carver moved into his house on Second Street he began developing what would become known as "the Carvers' Acres." This acreage spanned much of what is now University Circle in downtown Dayton. By 1840 there were more than twenty homes built on this land alone including two churches – First Baptist Church built around 1840-45 and Beloit Methodist Church built c1850-55 – both still standing today! A number of other businesses followed suit throughout ensuing decades including a blacksmith shop operated by John Witherspoon from 1830-35; an undertaker business run by Timothy Leary from 1840-44; a court house/prison started by Chief Justice Ruben Brandt in 1850; a cheese factory started by Nicholas Harker in 1860; a flour mill started by Cyrus McCormick in 1865; an insurance company started by Julius Swartzwelder in 1870; three grocery stores starting up around 1880: J & M’s Grocery Store (opened 1886), Gessner’s grocery store (opened 1890), and Pryor’s grocery store (opened 1895); four hospitals: Hackett Hospital opened 1861;; McKnight hospital opened 1862;; Brown hospital opened 1863;; Stroud hospital opened 1865]; five cotton ginners: Wheelock gin built 1837, French gin built 1840-41, Fenton gin built 1846-49; five sawmills: Clymer sawmill building erected circa 1830 located at Third Avenue & Elm streets NE., Potter sawmill building erected circa 1830 located at Third Avenue & High Streets NE., Mayhewsaw mill building erected circa 1830 located at Third Avenue & Delaware Streets NE., Washburn millbuilding erected circa 1830 located at Third Avenue & Orange streets NE.; six carpenters: Ladd Brothers carpenters established 1800 with home on Green Street NW.; Willard brothers carpenters established 1800 with home on High Street SE.; Hobson Brothers carpenters established 1800 with home on Delaware Streets SE.; Ziegler brothers carpenters established 1800 with home on Central Ave SE.: seven printers: Epperson printer establishment begun 1795 with first printing press - later renamed Webster Press - soon moved to Masonic Temple Odd Fellows Hall ; Courier Printing Company founded 1796 with first printing press - later renamed Fairfield Press ; Albrecht press establishment begin 1799 near Market Square NW.; Champion Typography Company founded 1800 near Vine street SW.: eight teachers: Mrs Phelps taught school until her death 1889; Mr Sibley taught school until his death 1899; Miss Welles taught school until her death 1901(); Dr Sprague teach eduction until his death 1907
