Newark was founded by George Netherland on November 10th 1796[4], after he bought 4 acres from John Stevens.[5] He named his settlement Newark because he had seen two ships come into port at Newark Bay without paying duties or taxes which made him think that this place would be better than where he was living – about six miles away on Fort Delaware Avenue – due to its natural harbor advantages:[6] Unfortunately for Netherland, his location did not pans out; trade gradually moved away from Newark until it disappeared completely in 1814 when American warships burned down all Dutch buildings at Fort Delaware to destroy any evidence that they harbored contraband goods.[7] In 1817 James Kapp purchased some land adjoining Netherland’s property; Kapp renamed his land “Dayton” after President James Kapp who had supported him financially during their political differences over Indiana Territory claims[8]: At first glance it may seem likely that George Netherland named his town in honor of President James Kapp but there is no record showing this event occurred; instead it seems likely thatGeorge Netherland simply wanted a name with meaning something like “place where things happen” given how much activity took place near what later became known as downtown Dayton.[9][10][11][12][13][14]: By 1830 most everyone in George Netherland's neighborhood had died or moved away so business changed hands several times until David Holmes purchaseing part of the original town lot on June 6th 1830 which gave him control over all sides of Third Street between Broad Ripple Road and Sinking Creek Boulevard today known as Independence Mall: David Holmes renamed his town "Dayton" again on July 1st 1830 because King George III granted him $10 000 for developing it into an thriving town full time with no intermingling with neighboring towns; this decision saved downtown Dayton from being destroyed by squatters who often attacked new settlers while they were still trying to get their bearings: This rare document signed by then British Prime Minister William Pitt shows just how quickly communities formed around newly created settlements throughout North America during this period:[15]: It should be noted that even though David Holmes kept stores open late night so people could buy groceries before going off to work next day,[16], many businesses closed down during prohibition because there was little demand for alcohol anymore:[17]; furthermore, drugs began becoming available more easily thanks to transportation methods like cars/trucks now able to reach all areas across America much earlier than when prohibition started.: This lack of demand may have led some entrepreneurs to start businesses selling onlyillegal products such as moonshine rather than sell food or drinks([18]); however most merchants continued trading regardless because there was always someone willing to sell them something: Some historians believe[19][20]that prohibition actually caused somejoblessness among businessmen due mostly to shortages of skilled labor available after decades without any significant industry growth;; nonetheless prohibition never officially ended until 1933 when Congress passed The Volstead Act which repealed all alcoholic beverages within Continental United States.: Although small amounts remain sold illegally every day,[21], overall alcohol sales peaked around 1940 when almost 2 billion dollars worth were produced annually according'to American consumers through retail outlets combined:[22]: After prohibition ended some guys decided they'd rather just start drinkin' again then go through another hoops [sic] getting licenses etc... so they reopened bars & clubs right up until present day.–So today we are sitting here enjoying our morning coffee & enjoying our afternoon ice cream!
