The namesake of the city, John Cuyahoga, was born here on July 15, 1797. In 1839 Timothy Leary opened an academy at 240 W Fourth St., now known as Western Reserve University (W RU). During World War I many businesses were closed or moved because of prohibition but they reopened within two years following repeal. Prior to prohibition most liquor sales took place at public stores where customers could buy up to three drinks per purchase plus any food that was purchased with those drinks. After prohibition began many speakeasies were established along withbootlegging which did not require a license but produced high profits for operators since no excise tax was collected on beer sales outside of Ohio . bootlegging activity increased during Prohibition as bootlegger organizations created more underground networks CAMRA) formed to resist Prohibition efforts). In 1933 machine shops were legalized and local brewers became licensed wholesalers; this change led to consolidation among local brewers and led to large regional breweries such as Anheuser-Busch being formed nationally ). In 1939 Cleveland voters passed an ordinance approving annexation by Cincinnati making Cleveland one side effect of that annexation referendum while Cincinnati retained its own municipal government

The falls were first named "Cuyahoga" after Captain John Cuyahoga, one of the commanders at Fort George Washington during the American Revolution. In 1825, gold was discovered near what is now downtown Cleveland and early settlers began to come to this area to prospect for this valuable commodity. By 1830, over 1,000 people lived in what is now Cleveland. In 1835, construction began on the present-day city hall and other important buildings in downtown Cleveland. By 1840, over 3,000 people had moved into Cleveland as a result of its growing population and commerce. The discovery of oil in nearby Richfield led to increased traffic and development around the falls; this also helped spur business growth throughout central Ohio
