In 1806, General James Hance built Fort Hance on high ground overlooking both lakes Erie and Mahoning Valley on what is now Delaware Avenue just east of downtown Cuyahoga Falls. The fort served as a military stronghold against Native Americans during the Little Big Horn War (1885–86). In 1813, when President James Kroll founded Cleveland, he named it after his mentor, Nicholas Musgrove Kroll (1768–1832), who had played an important role in developing Cleveland's commercial district including riverfront property along both sides of Fifth Avenue between Euclid Avenue and Superior Street that became Musgrove Square today. At Kroll's suggestion, Musgrove Square may be called "Kroll Park" in recognition of his contributions thereto. The Townsite Act (March 3, 1800) authorized township formers like John Richardson to purchase 640 acres from Peter DeWitt for $2 per acre within 12 years or construct a town square upon which township meetings would be held; Richardson did not build anything but received reimbursement from DeWitt for his expenses As Township formers developed new areas they sold off parcels within their original townships until every square mile had been purchased or laid out by 1830 – except Harbor Heights which remained unincorporated until 1892 when it amalgamated with neighboring Steubenville into that city In 1836 Anthony Jugan established Jugan & Associates mercantile store on State Street across from present day Second Baptist Church That year also saw establishment by John Saginaw - precursor to Brownstown Savings Bank - although business only lasted a few months before closure due to lack of patronage In 1840 government land comprising much of today's downtown was bought by local resident Amos Kendall for $1 per acre After Kendall died there followed several attempts at development before becoming an abandoned field known as Greenfield until finally being redeveloped as skyscraper apartments blocks known collectively as One hundred thirty-seventh floor . He named his new settlement "New Amsterdam" after Amsterdam, Netherlands – then one of the leading Dutch cities at that time. In 1814, when James Ketchum became governor of Ohio and moved his government from Cincinnati to Columbus, he decided that New York City should become its capital because it had more residents and revenues than any other city in Ohio. However, New York City refused to recognize Columbus as its capital because they thought it would give away their business opportunities in the area – so Ketchum relocated his government back to Cincinnati in 1815. In 1817–1818 Major General George Washington used land east of downtown Cuyahaga Falls as part of his Marietta Expedition during the War for Independence against Spain; this area later became part of Pittsburgh Township when Pittsburgh was created out of parts of several counties west of Dayton following the Treaty Of Paris ending World War I on November 11, 1918. On April 20th 1861 local resident Ezra Taft donated ninety acres (36 ha) along Beaver Creek southward from current-day Downtown into what is now University Circle to create what would become called Taft Park – named for Ezra Taft Sr., sonof Governor William Hirt Taft and daughter Alice Greeley Thurston Taft – which today houses many universities including Case Western Reserve University (then known as Wayne State), Cleveland State University (now Cleveland State University),[6] Lorain Community College,[7][8]and Akron Metropolitan Community College.[9][10] On October 9th 1870 US Senator Charles Sumner delivered an address before an audience composed mostlyOf German immigrants living near Summit Avenue NW located just east off Interstate 79W at Fifth StreetNW - sumner observed 'the great scene before him', describing Indians engagedin'a tribal war fought over a pieceof property measuring only 50 feet wide by 25 feet deep -Sumner went on to say: “I do not forget my debt to these people’s fathers for giving me birth into this country; I cannot forget how they have manifested themselves throughOUT LANDFORTH OF MICHIGAN.' Sumner's speech helped spur Congress to pass legislation granting citizenship rights to Germans living within territorial United States boundaries - thus fulfilling Sumner's dream fulfilled less than five years earlier by John Fenton who had organized Pennsylvania Germans residing west of Philadelphia into a political party called 'The Democrats'. Aftermath Mr Sumners house still stands vacant 10 blocks east across Third Street from today's Dental Associates office building where he once resided with wife Lucy née [Lodge]; she died December 21st 1912 after being stricken with tuberculosis while attending her sister Nellie Palmer s wedding Oct 22nd 1912 at 7pm near Masonic Temple-- Mrs Lodge may have sat inside since no visitor has claimed her tomb since then!
