Cuyahoga Falls is a city in the United States located on the Cuyahoga River. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The falls are less than a half-mile away from downtown Cuyahoga Falls and can be seen from Interstate 665. The first Europeans to see and explore what would become Cuyahoga Falls were French Jesuit missionaries in 1671 who named it "Falls of the Woody Two.'" In 1795, John Fenno, an early settler in what is now Cleveland Heights, built a mill on the falls for produce from his farm downstream. By 1825, mills had been built all around the falls by other entrepreneurs including Nicholas Haines (a pioneer developer of Cleveland), Augustus Woodward (the founder of Case Western Reserve University), and others. In 1851, Ohio became a state and this led to increased development along both sides of the river as people began looking for new lands to settle or expand their businesses into. One such business owner was James Sibley who formed a partnership with fellow entrepreneur Nicholas Haines to acquire land east of present-day State Street in what would become Independence Township. On July 16, 1851, they donated 1/2 mile (3 km) of riverfront property between First Congregational Church and Zions Bank for $1 million dollars which would later become known as Sibley Park. In 1865 when US 62 was extended into Medina County through Wauseon Township it paralleled two miles (3 km) of newly created Cuyahaga Falls Road just south of its intersection with Riverside Drive today’s Sibley Boulevard! This completes an everwidening network of roads that gatewayCItyCuyahogaFalls today! The first commercial establishment inside Sibley Park was called The Ohio Distributor which opened its doors on October 14th 1870! That same year saw American Woolen Mills open its doors with over 2,000 employees making carpets and blankets using local woolen fiber! Over time more stores followed suit until by 1890 there were 10 different store fronts within Sibley Park alone! It wasn’t until 1915 when decorative ironwork started being fabricated at The Iron Workshops adjacent to Orchard Lake Erie that this industry truly took off as manufacturers needed heavier weight pieces than before because World War I required steel production output ! In 1929 The Great Lakes Brewing Company established operations inside Sibley Park complete with their own brewing plant – one that still stands today– making craft beer under license from Anheuser Busch San Miguel breweries worldwide ! Industry growth continued unabated until 1971 when Prohibition ended – thus terminating much production; however during prohibition many artisanal brewers did convert to industrial operation due to high demand nonetheless most continue operate commercially today !! During World War II, Cuyahoga Falls played a critical role in Allied victory by providing munitions production plants with raw materials needed for war efforts including aluminum and lead factories as well as the Rubber Company plant which produced tires for military vehicles. Today many of these industries remain inactive but have been resurrected through local job creation initiatives such as nanotechnology company Trinity University's research park and area light industrial zone which opened in 2003. In addition to economic vitality, Cuyahoga Falls also boasts some notable cultural attractions including The Fountain Building (the former home of Art Institute of Cleveland) which houses a beautiful chandelier designed by Larkin Goldsmith; Akron's iconic Stonington Square Shopping Center with its grandiose architecture dating back to 1917; and numerous restaurants and bars that offer delicious food options within easy walking distance from downtown boundaries
The town of Cuyahoga Falls was founded in 1788 by Joshua Reynolds, a Revolutionary War veteran. The first post office was established in 1789, and the town name was changed to Cuyahoga in 1814. In 1825, Ohio became a state and the name of the capital (then called Ann Arbor) changed to Columbus. The town of Cuyahoga Falls annexed part of the city of Cleveland in 1952 and its population reached over 100,000 by 1970. In 2002, Cuyahoga Falls became home to the University of Akron and also hosts several other colleges and universities across Northeast Ohio.
