Coshocton is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located in Shiawassee County. The population was 9,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton-Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area and is the county seat of Shiawassee County. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1797 on land grant from Sir George Washington. It became a full borough in 1819 and an unincorporated community in 1820. The name "Coshocton" originated with John Coshocton, an early settler who named his farm after Coshocton Parish, England. The first post office was established in 1825 and closed in 1919; its last operator was Mrs. Emma Hilsenbacher. In 1905, Coshocton voters passed a resolution to change their name to "Shiawassee". They were successfully lobbied by local farmers who felt they had been unfairly treated by other towns in the area with similar names such as Dayton and Findlay. After years of planning and fundraising, the town's first parade took place on November 6, 1907 under the new name; it featured floats made out of hay wagons and cows brought safely back through an event that cost $1,500 ($ as of 2019). In 1915 Shaker Heights annexed Coshocton but did not change its name to Shiawassee until 1921 when it merged into that city's government system; however Mubasher Khan still retains ownership of several businesses including Sowetan Furniture & Flooring which he operates from his home until present day (the company has since moved to Kettering). In 1935 Wacoal Inc., a manufacturer of shoe polish switched plants from Toledo to Clairton for production due to wartime shortages caused by politics within America during World War II; this led to industry consolidation across many Rust Belt cities throughout Ohio which would have significant consequences for both business owners and workers over time - see also Trades Hall Union wrinkles . Coshocton is home to several colleges and universities, as well as a number of manufacturing plants and businesses. It was also once known for its pottery industry, which has since died off. The first residents of what is now Coshocton were Native Americans who lived on the shores of Lake Erie before moving inland about 1810. In 1814, John Nicholson located a settlement on the shoreline of Coshocton Creek in what is now North Bend Township. At this time it was known as "New Town". The town name changed to "Coshocton" in 1835 when James Mclntyre laid out a plat for what would become the current downtown area. In 1881, Coshocton became an incorporated town with a population of 5,000 people. In 1907 it annexed much larger neighboring townships including North Bend and White Oak Ridge in order to form the present-day city boundaries. As more businesses moved into town from outside forces such as agriculture or manufacturing, streetcar service arrived in 1909 which made shopping and commuting easier than ever before! Today's economy centers around college students and their families who commute into Cleveland or other nearby metropolitan areas; however, many factories remain open throughout the day along with some light industrial activity that continues until late at night thanks to advances in technology!
Coshocton is a village in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Coshocton was Levi Webster who came from New York in 1811. He built a cabin on the Scioto River and named it "Webster's Ferry". In 1817 he married Rachel Sprague and they moved to what is now the town of Northfield. They had three children: John Webster (1820-1912), Catharine Webster (1824-1914) and Gideon Webster (1828-1879). In 1835 John Websters son Gideon was able to purchase 640 acres of land northwest of Coshocton on the Scioto River for $800. This became known as "Gideon's Corner." The Websters farmed this land until 1862 when they sold it to Samuel Morse. Samuel Morse became the first postmaster of Coshocton in 1836 and served until 1861 when he resigned because of his involvement withthe Union Army during the Civil War. In 1865 Amos Webb bought 1/2 mile south of Gideon's Corner from Samuel Morse for $1 cash also becoming Postmaster for that year too but did not live there long as he passed away within months after purchasing it from him. A new Post Office building was erected on this site in 1870 by Capt George Prentice which fell into disrepair and was replaced by a much more modern structure in 1935 which still stands today located off Washington Road just west of Route 422 between Summit Lake Drive & Summit Drive Village. Captain Prentice also donated land to form what is now Indianola Cemetery near where present day Route 422 meets India Mill Road east side lot #927
