The first settler in what is now Coshocton Township was James Hargrave. He built a cabin on an emptying stream near present-day Delaware Road and US 50 in 1836. By 1840, about 20 settlers had arrived here. Many of these people were farmers who grew corn and other crops on their properties; some also mined coal nearpresent-day Delaware Road and US 50. In 1851, two men named Woodward bought 1,200 acres (50 km²) of land east of present-day Delaware Road and US 50 from Andrew Woodbury; they named it Northumberland County after their home county in England. This area became part of Coshocton Township when it was organized there that year. It wasn't until 1870 that anyone found oil shale under this surface while drilling for water wells that would become Wabash Coal Company's main mine on Delaware Road just south of the current town limits – this led to further development around this mine which began to bring more jobs into town during the late 19th century as well as Taxes raised from these businesses helped improve infrastructure such as schools and roads etc., making it easier for residents to get around without having to take public transportation or rely on horse drawn wagons anymore! As recently as 1940 only 6% of all homes were owner occupied………………………………………..
