Coshocton is a small town located in the southern part of Ohio. The population was 7,741 at the 2010 census. Coshocton is known for its offensive nickname, "The Onion City." It takes its name from a Indian word meaning " place where dealers in cobs and corn sell their goods." The first settlers to Coshocton were farmers who arrived in 1811. By 1825, the community had a total of about 50 residents. In 1829, Coshocton became a town when it was chosen as one of six towns in Stark County that would be consolidated with other local communities. The citizens of Coshocton voted to secede from Stark County on April 15, 1830. The early years of the town were difficult. There were no schools and most residents Did Not Own Houses so they had to rely on traders for food and shelter during bad times. However, over time things began to change around 1850 when John Pappas opened a store in what is now downtown Coshocton and started selling items like flour and soap. This led to more people coming into town and starting businesses which made life much easier for everyone involved- except for the Indians who continued to live near by unafraid of white people because they considered them animals
