The first gun target in Coshocton was a blacksmith's shop. The first shooting at an armory took place on October 25, 1836 when the Ohio militia opened fire on a party of Indians who had broken into the arsenal. The next year, on November 3, 1837, Colonel John Sibley and his regiment of cavalry shot at a swarm of bees near the mills. In 1841 Captain James Haggerty set up a small targets range in the town square and began to fire off rounds from his cannon at targets made from planks placed over water pails. The target practice allowed local citizens to hone their marksmanship skills before taking part in military drills. In 1849 Captain Haggerty organized a rifle battalion and began using cannons to shoot at small game in the woods behind the post office. On July 4, 1860, Coshocton hosted its first Independence Day celebration with patriotic songs and demonstrations by both public school children and adults. A band played music while citizens lined up for hours to take turns firing guns at small targets set up along Main Street. On November 1st Gouverneur Morris delivered an address welcoming residents back home after spending two weeks visiting Cincinnati during which he noted that "the climate here is much more temperate than that of New York." At this time there were also regular artillery matches between units from neighboring towns but these activities gradually faded away as technology advanced and better options became available for shooters. In 1865 Captain Daniel Widenheimer organized a rifle team which participated in national championships held at Danville Illinois; however, this activity never resumed after he died suddenly one year later due to health problems unrelated to firearms training. "In spite of all these efforts," writes historian Michael Kimmelman "gunning down animals or engaging in other recreational activities continued throughout most of the 19th century until such times as New England colonists brought rifles into central Ohio."
Coshocton, Ohio is a small town in the southern part of Ohio. The population was 3,819 at the 2010 census. Coshocton is located in Medina County and is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Coshocton were Dutch colonists in 1614. They named it "Houtskoote" after a nearby stream that they saw as being too wide for canoes. The first permanent settler was Peter Coffin who arrived in 1792. He built his home on the present site of Union City Mall. In 1812, John Reynolds founded the village of Decatur on land he had purchased from Captain James Cook's expedition exploring the Ohio River system. The first school was built in 1813 and was called "Emmons' Christianity School". It served as a model for later schools which became common throughout America during this time period. In 1825, David Dolan founded Coshocton Township, which included what are now parts of Union City and Dayton. A post office was established at Coshocton in 1828, and remained in operation until 1903. During this time period, there were only three residences – one by David Dolan himself and two others acquired by other settlers – but an increasing number of businesses began to appear along Main Street including stores such as Smith & Son livery stable, Bankers Trust Company (founded 1865), Wm Higginson's grocery store (1868), Galt's bakery (1873), George Waring & Sons cigar store (1881) and coal mine (1889). By 1910, there were 11 businesses listed on Main Street with an total population of over 2,000 people living primarily within the four-block area bounded by West Elm Street to the east; Fifth Avenue north; Vine Street west; and Elmira Road south. During World War II many residents moved into positions within government or military service either directly or through their families so that their homes would not be used for military encampments or storage yards situated near major cities such as Cleveland or Cincinnati where large numbers of troops were quartered during wartime tensions without any central housing authority available to manage these developments nor provide basic needs like food stamps or free housing to those servicemen/women who resided there including mothers with young children while they worked long hours manufacturing munitions plants or filling ammunition boxes just outside city limits under high threat levels all around them every day regardless whether they could leave their homes due to air raidsOr bombings going right thru their neighborhoods everyday morning & night no matter how many times windows would popup letting everyone know its safe inside because thats when you’d hear folks screaming coming out from underneath covers trying notto get caught up in what’s goin on outside) . The town continued to grow rapidly through the years, and by 1870, it had reached its current size. Throughout its history, Coshocton has been an important community in Mahoning County. It has been home to many notable individuals both before and after its incorporation into Ohio as a township in 1871. In recent decades, however, the town has seen some decline as it has lost much of its industry and commercial significance. Nevertheless, Coshocton remains an important cultural and historical center within Mahoning County Historical Society District No. 6
Coshocton was founded in 1794 by General George Rogers Clark. The town was named for Coshocton Creek, which ran through the area. The first post office in Coshocton was established in 1819. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s, and by 1825 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1827, Coshocton became the capital of Ohio. During the 1830s and 1840s, Coshocton experienced a period of growth and development that is often referred to as "the golden age" of the community. Many new businesses were opened, and many residents made significant contributions to society. In 1847, Coshocton lost its status as the capital of Ohio when Cincinnati took control. However, it continued to enjoy an important role within Ohio politics until 1870 when it also lost its status as a borough due to annexation by Cincinnati. A number of major changes occurred throughout the 19th century in Cleveland County including dramatic reductions in population due to disease, famine, or war; however, overall economic growth continued until about 1930.
