Coshocton is a small town in northeastern Ohio on the lower Mahoning River. The population was 9,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Coshocton community began as a cluster of log cabin villages near the confluence of the Scioto and Mahoning Rivers in 1812. The first white settler in what is now Coshocton was Johnathon Gibbs, who arrived in 1814. By 1840, there were more than seventy families living here. In 1849, James Fenton purchased ninety acres (36 hectares) of land east of present-day Main Street and built a home he named "Fenton's Grove". The name stuck and has been used by successive generations of residents ever since. In 1907, local school trustees decided to build their own schools rather than continue using portable classrooms which were becoming increasingly unreliable in severe weather conditions. A cornerstone for this new district was laid on October 23rd by Mrs. Anna Mudgett; it marked the beginning of Coshocton's long association with public education . Coshocton is a village in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Coshocton Township. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that became Coshocton was first settled by French colonists in 1758 as part of the Northwest Territory which was then divided into sections for settlement according to pattern established by George Washington in 1785. The first permanent settler in what is now Coshocton was Amos Hickey, who arrived in 1761 and erected a cabin on a hill near present-day Lebanon Street and Western Avenue. In 1767, John Nicholson bought land from Hickey and founded Nicholson's Academy on what is now North Main Street. In 1802, Peter Geddes purchased two-thirds of Nicholson's acreage for $1,000 from Nicholas Nichols so that Geddes could build a house there also known as "Geddes' House". In 1803, John Dickenson bought one-third of Geddes' estate for $1,500 from Geddes’ widow Elizabeth Ayer Dickenson and started building what would become Old Hickory Tavern (now First United Methodist Church). On July 3, 1812 – four days after President James K. Polk delivered his State Of The Union Address – Dickenson sold one third of his holdings in Old Hickory Tavern to Elijah Whitehead for $2,000 cash without any consideration given to him other than purchase price alone! This event helped lay the foundation for future commercial development along Wabash Avenue eastward towards Cincinnati where it has continued uninterrupted to this day! In 1814, James Caldwell built Caldwell's Mills on current site of Old Hickory Tavern with help from investors including Christopher Bogue who had earlier invested money in Caldwell's flour mill at Milltown north of Dayton while still living at home with his mother (known today as Christopher Bogue Park). At this time mills were becoming an important industry due to their ability to provide textiles with consistent quality year round; thus these early mills are significant symbols associated with earlyera American industrialization which played a significant role in shaping later Cleveland history such as its rise to prominence during World War II thanks largely to its military production capabilities! Today many products made at Caldwell's Mills include jeans, T-shirts and truck bumpers! The village began annexing adjacent townships beginning around 1830 when trustees felt it necessary because they had not been able to generate enough revenue through stock offerings or taxes alone despite being located directly on the central business district (CBD) line having easy access bothto raw materials needed for manufacturing enterprises such as cotton ginners etc.,and also services like banking which were critical during those years before technology supplanted most manual labor activities! Consequently most villages throughout America followed suit over time culminating with incorporation into larger municipalities through annexation ordinances passed by “the Board” although sometimes individual townsfolk did manage to secede or even form their own separate municipality if they felt they had been ignored or neglected!) During prohibition era 1920s & 1930s bootlegging activity increased due various reasons such as repeal but mostly because demand grew out side supply created by high priced liquors being produced elsewhere(especially Canada)
Coshocton, Ohio was founded in 1814 by John Stephenson. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In the 1850s, Coshocton became a center for heavy industry and growth. The town's first hotel was built in 1853 and the first cotton gin was erected in 1857. Coshocton also became known as the "Queen City of Ohio." In 1861, during the American Civil War, Coshocton supported the Union side and many businesses in the town donated goods to help support troops on both sides of the war. After the war, Coshocton began to decline as industries closed down and crime increased. However, through entrepreneurship and investment, Coshocton has regained its former stature as an important community within Ohio.
