In 1903 the Coshocton Rifle and Pistol Company merged with the Euclid Rifle and Pistol Company to form one unit, the Euclid Rifle and Pistol Company of Ohio (ERPCO). ERPCO served as a statewide police force for many years before disbanding in 1971.

The city's namesake comes from General George Washington's battle at Yorktown in 1781. When news reached Coshocton that General Washington had been successful at Yorktown, residents began calling themselves "Coshoctons" in honor of General Washington and his victory. In 1837, John Prentice donated land to make up for what he saw as inaccurate reports about his town's size. The first building in Coshocton was erected on this donation in 1839. In 1870, coalmining started operations in the area and soon became one of the most important industries in Coshocton. By 1915, there were over 100 mines operating within reach of downtown Coshocton. Coal production stopped during World War II because of wartime shortages but has resumed since then with a focus on renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and solar panels. Today, downtown Coshocton is home to a variety of businesses including restaurants, stores, bars and businesses related to renewable energy generation such as wind turbines and solar panels. With continued growth potential thanks to new business investment and renovation projects completed throughout 2017/2018 by local volunteers who help keep Downtown vibrant, it seems likely that little will change until around 2040 when manufacturing jobs may no longer be feasible or available due to technological advances which have made energy-intensive products more efficient than ever before
Coshocton was founded in 1795 by Levi Cushman. The town was named after the Coshocton Creek. In 1814, the first courthouse in the town was built. The town grew rapidly and by 1830, there were over 50 businesses in operation. By 1845, Coshocton had a population of 1,600 people and it became a city in 1857.
