The Coshocton area was first settled by the Lenni Lenape tribe in 1675. The community was named after Captain John Coshocton, who donated land to the town in 1814. The community began developing as a farming village, with small businesses and homes being built throughout the 1800s. Early industry in the area included wagon making and foundry work.
